At first glance, The Essence looks like it’s about to redefine not only Indian food but maybe your entire dining outlook. The lighting, the decor, and the ambiance all whisper “upscale.” Then you sit down for a few minutes and realize it’s just like any other Indian restaurant, only with mood lighting that hides its own artwork. The lamps hang perfectly in front of the paintings, which makes them hard to see. Maybe that’s intentional, but thankfully we weren’t there to eat the paintings.
I expected some soothing Indian background music, maybe a little sitar or gentle Bollywood instrumentals. Instead, I was greeted by what sounded like Spanish banda music. Maybe it’s the new wave of Indian fusion. The good news is that it helped drown out two rowdy 49er fans at the bar who were trying to outshout each other.
The food was good but not redefining anything. The Lazeez Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala were both flavorful and greasy in that comforting, traditional way. The naan was perfect, soft, and buttery. It was your standard dhaba-style Indian food, delicious and satisfying in the familiar way that makes you happy even when you were expecting something fancier.
The guy who took our order looked like he’d rather be anywhere else, but he was very proud of his Square POS tablet. He wore it across his chest like a Coach purse and carried it around the entire time, waiting for someone to give him a reason to use it.
The laminated menus were handy. If the AC ever goes out, you can use them as fans.
Restrooms were clean and smelled nice, which might actually be the most “redefined” part of the whole experience.
The host, bartender, and waiter all shared the same vibe of mild boredom. The food took a while to arrive, and maybe one of them could have helped the kitchen to speed things up a little.
Overall, it’s a decent spot with good food, nice decor, and a slightly confused identity. The name sets expectations too high. Nothing was redefined, but everything was fine. Four out of five stars, mostly because 3.5 feels too mean.

Great intimate spot for some amazing authentic Indian food! Everything was very delicious and definitely cooked with love and time! So much flavor in every dish and the staff were very pleasant in providing recommendations and making us feel very comfortable as if we were guests in their home. Great dining experience.
Highly recommend the Chicken Chettinad and Butter Chicken! Succulent chicken pieces in each dish and large portions! The mango lassie is also delicious!

Absolutely loved our experience at this modern Indian restaurant. The flavors are bold and creative, with a fresh twist on traditional dishes. The presentation is beautiful, the service is attentive, and the ambiance strikes the perfect balance between upscale and cozy. Apparently, the wait staff doesn’t get the tips. So if you want to tip, tip in cash.

I never liked Indian food I have tried at restaurants and home cooking, but this place WOWED me.
The decor and music was very nice. Everything was clean. The food was amazing! “Shril” our server, I hope I spelled that right guided me through the menu and recommended some amazing dishes. If this was my experience at all Indian restaurants with this taste and service I would have been eating Indian food long ago. This is definitely a place I will be revisiting and bringing others to.

All of the food was delicious! Very flavorful and intoxicating aromas! The menu has a lot of variety from different regions of India and the portions are good sized.
