Super experience, the servers were very friendly and their recommendations were spot on. The food was delicious, the tofu in the Thai Basil Noodles had just as much flavour and texture as the chicken in the Pad Thai.

This was a first visit to Gingergrass. Its a casual, cheerful restaurant, small and cozy. The best seat in the house could be the swing for two! It and some fairy lights add a sense of whimsy to an otherwise plain decor. The service was great. Friendly and efficient, busy but in good humour. The food was good. Dishes tried include crab rangoon, veg thai spring rolls, crispy shrimp, cashew chicken curry, peanut (massaman) curry with tofu, with chicken and with shrimp. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal and the desserts of mango ice cream, fried Thai bananas with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. It’s a good place to go with friends. Worth a stop for lunch or dinner. I would recommend a reservation, though.

The past two times I’ve ordered pick-up have been very disappointing…
I paid 110$ for the amount of food in the pictures below, the shrimp curry had 4-5 small shrimps in it, and was the size of a regular coffee mug and cost 23$. I understand the cost of groceries right now, but restaurants buy in bulk (I used to be a cook at multiple restraints and a sous chef where I was in charge of produce and protein orders), I understand restaurants are also struggling right now but I can’t justify paying 23$ for 5 shrimp, and only one serving of rice (that cost extra 8$ per portion) that would only last one meal, and would not cover accompanying one dish. The food is super tasty but there are other local restaurants that have similar ingredients that do not charge this amount and the portions are accurate to what you would expect.

My husband and I came here for lunch, thinking we would be in and out in under an hour (his allotted break time). When we arrived, there were 3 tables seated and was not very busy. It did pick up to a full house during our stay. It took 45 minutes from when we sat down to when we had food on our table, which didn’t leave much time to eat. There was only one server, so I do give some grace, but it did take 20 minutes for our order to be taken.

In terms of the food, the pho was lacking. Coming from Calgary and having to traveled to Vietnam, we’ve had many pho meals over the years. The bean sprouts were at the bottom of the bowl (instead of served on the side) so they were soggy and no crunch. The broth flavor was not on par, and the serving size was quite small for the price point. We would not return for the pho.

The spring rolls were quite good. $8.00/2 was a little pricey, but they are on the thicker side so I can understand the reasoning.

The Chicken Pad Thai was decent. The noodles were short (cut maybe?) which was odd to me, but the flavors were there along with a decent amount of spice.

Overall, we would consider returning to try the curry or other items to see if there is a meal we would crave enough to go back for. Will update this review with other thoughts.

The Pad Thai is satisfactory but not outstanding. However, I am disappointed with the salad. The salad is just a bunch of cucumber, carrots, and slices. There are no other ingredients. All ordered items taste too much soury. It can not be a restaurant salad item.

Stopped by this wonderful eatery on a trip to St Johns and was not disappointed.

While I had Pad Thai instead of Vietnamese, it was just what I was craving. I’m picky when it comes to my Pad Thai and I loved it.

My partner got the Vermicelli and loved it as well. Can’t wait to go back and have some vermicelli myself!

The success of Gingergrass relies on the population of St. John’s not knowing any better.

If you’ve had any Thai/Vietnamese food from a half-decent restaurant in a city you’ll be disappointed. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Good location and lovely service.
However the food is not authentic, rather bland , not much better than Thai express.
As a person who lived in Thailand, I cannot understand why they poached the meat then add into the curry sauce for 2 mins and call it a curry.
Simply follow the recipe from the curry sauce jar, cook the meat with coconut milk for a while till taste combined.
Would not recommend it.

Went to this place for my wife’s birthday. The location is very modern and newly-renovated with a wheelchair access ramp. There’s plenty of seating inside, and the decor is very fresh, modern, and undeniably Thai! We we t on a Saturday night during St. Patty’s day weekend, so the place was packed! Despite this, we only waited four minutes for our table, and then we were seated. Appetizers came out quickly; within 10-15 minutes of ordering, and mains followed soon after (10 mins after the mains). The northern Thai egg noodles were very tasty, and we ordered them hoping they’d be similar to Khao Soi (they are similar, but not identical). The basil chicken was delicious! The veggies were tender and succulent, with the perfect balance of crunch and heat. The chicken was also very tasty, however there were some pieces that tasted a bit rubbery as if they had been boiled. The strange part – the chicken did t come with any rice, so I had yo order it separately on the side. The fried banana with ice cream was delicious; not overly sweet or otherwise over the top, but instead the perfect blend of umami, sweetness, and savoury. Some pro-tips; make a reservation beforehand, and irder rice as a side if your dish doesn’t come with any!

Stopped in randomly with my husband on the way home today since neither of us felt like cooking dinner.

Dining room is simple, comfortable and clean, in a great location from downtown but unfortunately the views aren’t the best, haha. That’s totally out of their control, though, and there was lots of great light coming in to make the place cheery!

Staff were very friendly and asked right away if we had any special dietary requirements. We were seated fairly quickly, despite the restaurant being almost full and not having a reservation. Unfortunately once seated with menus it took quite a while to be served again; A table of 4 came in after us and were seated, had orders taken and were given waters/cutlery while we sat waiting for someone to return to our table.

When someone did finally come back to take our orders we were given water but no cutlery or napkins. Our appetizer arrived and once finished they came to clear the plate and then realized we had no napkins or cutlery. Perhaps they were short staffed or something but it was a bit disappointing to seem to be missed with a larger table receiving better service across the room.

Our food was… food. The Pho seemed overly greasy and the sprouts were at the bottom of the bowl so they lost their snappy freshness in the hot broth; everything just seemed soggy, overcooked and bland. I was hungry, so I ate it, but I remarked to my husband that it seemed almost like the ‘Chef Boyardee’ version of Pho compared to the various other Vietnamese/Asian restaurants I’ve been to.
