Chooka’s – A Hidden Gem Japanese Café in Brunswick

Chooka’s beauty lies in its simple menu and staple drinks. It is a small cafe with a strong focus on Japanese-inspired drinks and rice balls (onigiri). The only downside of this simplicity is that while it is perfect for a quick lunch or a vibey place to chill, the venue itself is tiny, with fewer than 10 tables (ish).
The onigiri is the highlight for me. You get classic options like mentai, roe, and tuna, alongside more creative combinations such as unagi and sakura (dried shrimp with crispy bits) which leave you wanting more. The portions are quite generous for onigiri, and in the summer heat, their somen is honestly a lifesaver.
Staple drinks like matcha are solid. Nothing fancy, but basic done well. There are also Japanese-inspired sodas and teas if you want something lighter or more refreshing.
Overall, if you are looking for a relaxed spot to chill and enjoy some downtime, this place hits the mark. Just keep in mind that the small venue limits how long you might want to stay, as once it gets fully packed, it can feel a bit cramped.
I do wish they expand so they can seat more customers 🙂 but everything is amazing
Very non-descript Japanese café in Brunswick, but, a bit of a local gem. Inside the shop is tiny, but, outside seating is actually pretty nice weather permitting.
They specialize in onigiri and omusubi but a bit underwhelming. Naturally, as a Japanese cafe, matcha is also a specialty and it was excellent.
Iced matcha latte
Intensity: SS+, 9.5/10. As good as any I’ve ever had. A bit grainy but I like that. Also nice that you can change amount of sweetener.
Consistency: SSS, 10/10. Spot on. No problems
Value: S+, 8.5/10. $6 is quite good these days.

Kombu onigiri
Flavour: A+, 7.5/10. Honestly liked the simple seasoned kelp. Ratio to rice is off though.
Texture: S, 8/10. Rice was fresh and fluffy but a bit too sticky.
Value: B, 6/10. $6
Unagi
Flavour: S, 8/10. Sweet soy sauce was nice (maybe a touch too sweet). Eel was a bit fishy, perhaps due to boiled preparation rather than grilled.
Texture: S, 8/10.
Value: A, 7/10. $8
Service was friendly, I didn’t take many photos because I wouldn’t recommend it or come back. Sorry.
My husband ordered their beef bowl which was really tasty. It was a teishoku set so it came with a hearty miso broth ❤️ and pickled veggies. I ordered their signature onigiri set which was also yum. The iced matcha is at par with the best in melb. I will defo go back to try the other onigiris esp the spam musubi!
Overall this place is a must try in brunswick
The spam おむすび break my common stereotypes of japanese omusubi (which is 7-11-ish, delicate, tiny, always remain half-full even tho paid for 2 or more omusubi for lunch).
However this one here is different, it distinguishes.
Its HUGE.
And seriously, cannot have a second omusubi if theres already a spam one in your order
Yeah definitely recommend
