This welcoming French café in Maboneng was inspired by the café culture found in the artsy Latin Quarter of Paris where its two genial French-Congolese owners lived before moving to Joburg. There’s a basic French café menu, jazz on the stereo, good coffee and wine (the all-important Parisian essentials) plus plenty of tables on the pavement for enjoying Maboneng’s colorful streetlife.

This café was packed when we arrived during lunchtime, but the friendly staff gave us a quick tour of the restaurant and found us a table outdoor. We went with the staff’s recommendation to get the Bertrand Popular Fish to share. The portion was generous and very filling. The fish was lightly grilled, but I did wish there were more seasonings.
The restaurant had really cool décor and a ton of seating inside. The café’s cat was cute and playful. Street parking is right outside the café.

A lovely cafe in the Maboneng suburb of Johannesburg, drawing inspiration from on owner’s experience of Paris. A 1920s residential building that has been innovatively converted into multiple eating and bar areas. Good food, a great range of drinks and a wonderful array of beautiful rooms, which depending on the time of day will feature films and live music. If one of the friendly staff offers to show off the various levels and bar spaces inside, it’s well worth it. Also great for people-watching, if you get a seat on the veranda, as promenade o’clock kicks in at the Maboneng end of Fox Street.

Definitely the place to be in Maboneng. I absolutely love the atmosphere Mr B created. So, so beautiful. My new favourite thing are the Thursday wine and conversation sessions! What an intellectually and socially stimulating treat. The live performances (usually on Saturdays) are also so refreshing. They have Mogodu Monday, Movie Night Tuesdays and Karaoke Wednesdays. There’s just always something to do and I love it!

Absolutely love how the interior design and atmosphere of this place go hand in hand. My best friend and I come here all the time because we love it so much. The service is great , staff is super friendly and knowledgeable of the history of each room. Weve never had a bad experience here. And let me not start on how cute and friendly their cat George is.

I had the pleasure of visiting one of Johannesburg’s most luxurious lounges – Bertrands, located in the heart of the city. I absolutely loved the warm and beautiful setup throughout their different lounge areas, and they feature incredible live jazz bands that really keep the energy alive.

My friends and I spent a wonderful Saturday evening at Bertrand Cafe, listening to a great local Jazz band and enjoying a delicious dinner. Our server Cynthia took excellent care of us and was very friendly and professional. I love the eclectic and fun atmosphere at Bertrand Cafe and can’t wait to return soon.

Went out for brunch recently at Bertrand Cafe and definitely enjoyed the experience, only left because of the weather.
Will definitely be back to try other meals on their menu the vibe is very chilled so brace yourself for the service, it’s friendly service but a bit slow so be patient because the food will be worth the wait.

Go and experience it yourself…… I have found home for my breakfast, business meeting, events, dinner with friends, alone as well because somehow you meet new friends that become your family too. Saturday live Jazz music and food, Bertrand covers you through your entire day.
