This is a legit little French boulangerie that absolutely delivers. The food is fantastic, and the mille-feuille is hands down the best I’ve ever had in the U.S.—perfectly crisp, creamy, and not overly sweet. Everything tastes authentic, like something you’d find in a neighborhood bakery in France, with a great selection of classic French dishes and pastries. The space is cute, welcoming, and very fairly priced for the quality. A must-visit if you’re ever in the Del Rey/Alexandria area.

I used to really like coming to Gustave whenever I was in the area. Their sandwiches are really good, and still are, but it’s also been kinda mid here lately. I recently ordered a pumpkin cream cold brew, and its mostly large chunks of ice. I could barely get my straw in, and the drink itself is very watery. I didn’t get a full five sips and it’s gone. I also got a citron tart, but I asked to eat it here and they couldn’t even be bothered to give me a plate. It also started melting right away? I’ve never had a tart do that. I’ve been kind of put off, so I don’t think I’ll frequent this place as often anymore…

I popped in on a mild Winter day, and I tried the Iced Mocha with a slice of double chocolate cake. What I liked most about the Iced Mocha were the small shavings of chocolate at the bottom of the cup — they added yumminess when sipping it through a straw. The double chocolate cake was good, but the topping was on the dry side from sitting out in the open all morning. After walking a few more errands and taking my next snack break, I pulled from my bag the Everything Beignet. Mind you, I never do “everything” anything but I am partial to trying any flavor of beignet. Now this beignet was a nice size, fresh tasting, flavorful everything topping — simply delish! Then my tastebuds noticed the hint of lemon mixed in filling that made their Everything Beignet such a delight. All was good so far that I cannot wait to try the other goodies I bought on a whim. Sometimes when you stop in a place for the first, you have no idea you’ve stumbled on unexpected delights!

Had exceptional lentil soup (vegan) and a classic French baguette sandwich with ham and cornichon. Our server Jade was very helpful and friendly.

Literally a bakery from France transplanted into the United States. The fresh baked items are exactly what you would get if you were sitting at a café in Paris. The flavors are wonderful and the options are plenty.

The staff is always helpful and they even have a back patio area where you can hang out with the kids or other friends. The true Jim in the heart of a wonderful neighborhood called Del Ray in Virginia.

If you need a relaxing, community spot. Get out of your home office, bring your computer and do some work while you enjoy the wonderful pastries, coffee, and atmosphere.

I recommend places like this to my clients who need to reduce their anxiety and improve their sleep. #sleepsciencetoday #the sleepscienceguy

One of the authentic French Bakeries in the area that provide quality products. Service was great, but they were definitely busy on a Sunday mid-morning. Waiting line blends in with the ordering line and the space can get tight in there. Bring patience. Unless you have a large party or have kids, inside seating area or out front are probably the best option for you. Sandbox and outdoor spaces can get really crowded with kids and parents on playdates.

Fair prices for the area, especially if you value fresh products with better ingredients not the flash frozen stuff served by competitors.

Lots of options to choose. Very good sandwiches (sad I never took any picture), good quality bread and fresh ingredients. Pastries are delicious. I also appreciate that they offer many mini versions to choose. Coffee is very average compared to St Elmo’s across the street. Seats may be hard to find for dine-in on weekends, but there are plenty of places to sit outside in this area.

Bonjour! Of all the breakfast options in and around Del Ray/Old Town, our regulars are Gustave’s, Junction, and Tatte’s (with the ol’ Grape & Bean in Rosemont an honorable mention). Gustave’s is basically a smaller scaled version of Tatte’s: great pastries, coffees, and fussy Mediterranean plates (in a good way… a step up from diner fare), albeit with a smaller footprint and slightly fewer options. Still, the miniaturization affords faster service and smaller crowds (at least between 7 and 8:30 AM), and the space is every bit as bright, cheery, and inviting.

Junction has the heartier diner-y Mexicali offerings and Vietnamese coffee (and cream-filled cruffins!), but it’s more of a Fall-Winter-rainy day cavern. Tatte’s is upscale, clean, and clinical. Gustave’s is an all olive oil, orange-lemony Spring and Summer hangout, with a biergarten built for neighborhood hangouts with pets. (The biergarten by Matt & Tony’s — a local place ideal for networking lunches or surprise-impressing out-of-town family dinners, especially if they might like to try something from the bar — is likewise popular, albeit with less of a picnic vibe.)

[Posted at the request of a member of the staff… I mean, if you’re just hanging out, occupying table space, leaving a review is the least you can do, right?]
