When we had questions about happy hour and pricing, the staff member helping us repeatedly responded with “I don’t know” and didn’t offer to check the system or clarify. I completely understand not having every answer memorized, but with the register right there, it would have been helpful if he had looked up the information for us.
We had also seen on social media that tortas were listed as $10 during happy hour. When we asked about it, we were told, “I don’t know anything about it, but they aren’t.” That would have been perfectly fine, we just would have appreciated a bit more effort or explanation.
The food truly was great, but service plays a big role in the overall experience. I hope this is just an off day, because the kitchen is clearly doing an amazing job.
Also, I posted a photo from their website that said on the day of I went that it was $10 and the guy at the counter continued to tell me I was wrong.
What I love most is there’s no overthinking it here. No gimmicks, no trying too hard — just food that speaks for itself. It’s the first place in Austin that’s given me those Mexico City flashbacks, and now it’s my go-to.
When we walked in, it was just my wife and me in the restaurant along with two employees, yet we were not greeted at all. The employee who later took our order was initially on his phone, which was not an issue in itself. However, after putting his phone down, he did not acknowledge us, greet us, or approach the counter. Instead, he moved a few items around behind the counter, leaving us standing there unsure of whether we were supposed to wait or step forward. After a moment of confusion, I finally spoke up and said, “Okay, we would like to order,” and only then did he come over to the register.
During the interaction, the only question we were asked was whether our order was for here or to go. There was no greeting or warmth, and overall we did not feel welcomed at all. This was especially disappointing given that this visit was meant to be a celebratory dinner and it immediately set an uncomfortable tone for the evening.
Thankfully, the food itself was still very good, which is why we are giving four stars instead of fewer for the depressive customer service.
I want to emphasize that this experience was very different from our previous visits. My wife and I have been to La Plancha four to five times now, and every visit prior to tonight has been excellent. The service has always been warm, friendly, and welcoming, especially when the owner is working. She is consistently inviting, takes the time to explain the menu, and makes the experience feel personal.
We have tried a number of menu items over our visits, including the Le Tejana, La Plancha Burger, La Hawaiiana, La Chilaquiles, and the La Tinga torta of the month, and every sandwich has been delicious. We also always order the Papas Fritas which comes with chipotle mayo and jalapeño ranch and is delicious, along with the Queso and hips, which have become must-haves for us every time we come.
Tonight felt like a clear outlier, and I hope this feedback reaches the owner because the level of service we received from the cashier tonight, Juan according to the receipt, who was wearing a blue baseball hat and glasses, was a noticeable contrast to the usual.
We do plan to return because we truly enjoy the food and the overall atmosphere when it is on point. We will likely just try to visit when the owner is working.
