I would say the service was excellent. The food was good. Some dishes, better than others. The steak and fries was delicious. Really enjoyed the grouper tacos. The Peruvian pulled pork was a little bit too greasy and salty. The cornmeal ice cream with blueberry compote was good. Cocktails were good. I would say it is on the expensive side but still reasonable.

We visited Maize Cocina & Cocktails in Westfield, NJ for their Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu. We were seated quickly and welcomed warmly, and the atmosphere was absolutely beautiful , definitely one of the highlights of the night. The cocktails were also excellent and well-crafted.
Unfortunately, the food and service didn’t match the ambiance. While the staff was friendly, the service was extremely slow, drinks took about 20–30 minutes to arrive, which made the overall experience feel dragged out.
As for the food, some items felt underwhelming and not very fresh. The tortilla chips tasted like they came from fryer oil that needed changing. The guacamole was very good, but the clear standout of the night was the mushroom empanadas , absolutely delicious and the most memorable dish we had.
The steak, however, had a noticeable gamey taste and seemed under-cleaned and under-seasoned (mostly salt), which made it hard to enjoy. The “maize” fries were also very dry , definitely something you’d want a drink for, though getting one took a while.
Overall, I’d rate the food around 3.5/5. The experience didn’t feel particularly Mexican-inspired in flavor, and there’s room for improvement in both seasoning and freshness. With such a great atmosphere and strong cocktail program, this place has a lot of potential ,but the kitchen and service consistency could really use refinement. Me and my husband both are now experiencing stomach discomfort the next day after having dined here. I unfortunately will not be coming back .

A great and well located Mexican restaurant, just steps off of the New Jersey transit. The menu was quite expensive for new modern Mexican food. We ended up trying quite a couple of dishes to sample everything. Will definitely have to come back to try some of their drinks. The octopus dish was overcooked and over seasoned. However, the chicken Tinga nachos were incredible perfectly crispy yet smothered in cheese and sauces. The Molay chicken was perfectly cooked, large portion size and incredibly flavorful. The grouper tacos were the best taco that we had, perfect blend of crunch with a soft sales taco paired with a delicious slaw. The brisket tacos were also good, but were a bit harder to share as it was one large chunk of brisket. The Hamachi was mediocre at best, it felt like an attempt for this Mexican restaurant to try something out of their realm, not their best. The steak and maze fries were the highlight of the meal. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender, and the chimichurri sauce provided a perfect balance. The maze fries were perfectly crisp and tasted like a yucca fry, these were a top favorite of the table. The chips and guac were great, freshly made tortilla chips and a pleasantly chunky salty guacamole. Overall, the food was very good and will definitely be back to try some other options.

I tried their themed drinks during Addamsfest and they were great. I decided to have my birthday dinner here a couple weeks later to try their food, and sadly, it was a mistake.
Everything from start to finish was a huge disappointment. We were seated at the most cramped table in the place, next to a bussing station, despite having reservations on a Thursday and there being quite a few available tables. No big deal, i asked the hostess if she could move us and she did, and i appreciated it, just thought it was strange.
Ordered a margarita to start and it was clear that the limes were bad. I asked them to remake it and it was better but still not great. The nachos were good so I thought things were looking up. But sadly, my steak was overcooked and the maize fries were a soggy miss. They also never gave me a steak knife, and the steak was cut into these awkward huge chunks.
The real travesty was the dessert. Worst churros I’ve ever had, doughy, clearly not fresh, and the “chocolate sauce” they served them with was a watery chocolate milk. I ordered a cold foam cacao martini and there was zero cold foam on it. It was the strangest thing. At that point all I could do was laugh. It was also not good. It tasted like they dumped bailey’s in a glass and called it a martini.
Our server was not very attentive or friendly, never asked us how things were or if we wanted another round.
The prices are just ridiculous for the quality of the food and the service. I think if you’re going to be charging these prices, then obviously, the food should be good, but also, there needs to be better attention to detail about things like giving people a steak knife when they order a steak.

We also ordered the esquites, and I was honestly shocked at how bland they were. Esquites are usually a guaranteed hit — mayo, cotija, lime, and corn, but somehow this had no flavor at all.

Had a great meal. We started with the Brussels salad with shrimp, which was fresh and perfectly balanced. For mains, the steak with maize fries was cooked just right and full of flavor, and the chicken dish was equally delicious and satisfying. Everything came out hot and well-timed.
Big shout-out to our server, Davey Dee, who did a fantastic job—friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. We’ll definitely be back!
