First and foremost, let’s get this out of the way – this is a bar. Not a restaurant, a bar. That was made apparent in a few ways throughout our visit. First – the staff is more concerned with keeping the alcohol flowing/coming for all other patrons. Which is fine, a business choice I guess, but I gotta wonder from a staff’s tips perspective, how much of a tip is someone who orders a few drinks going to give versus someone buying nearly $100 in food. If the service is good, I’d normally give $25-$35 as the tip. I guess perhaps their regular patrons don’t.
Second – food keeps people there longer. Serving alcohol is fine, nothing wrong with that, but eventually either the patrons needs to leave or order food there. This place had some very delicious offerings! In fact, the “Fintucky Fully” was shockingly good. as was the appetizers we had. We didn’t have any alcoholic drinks, not against it, normally would, just wasn’t feeling like doing so this particular visit. This seemed to mean we were not as much of a priority.
Third – some of what appeared to be regular patrons attributed to a less-than-family-friendly atmosphere. While again, this IS a bar, so a certain level of that can and should be expected, there were multiple males who acted much less like modern human men and more like 18th century portage or dockmen who “ain’t seen a woman in a spell, how bout it darlin, whatcha hidin under that there dress” only stated in a much more vulgar way using more modern language. This is only slightly the fault of the establishment. Running a business a certain way will attract a certain type of clientele. It would appear that most of the folks in attendance this particular evening were not like this and only a few were, but in regards to these types of people it only takes a few to ruin the overall atmosphere.
Visiting on a night other than a Friday or Saturday night would be my recommendation if you’re bringing children or young ladies. If you’re looking for a bar with great food, live music, and a far-from-commercial/corporate atmosphere, it’s definitely worth giving the Longbranch Saloon a try.
We will be back, because the food is worth it, to see if the only issue we had (certain other clientele) is limited to just certain evenings. Would really like to give this place a rating higher than 3 stars if the atmosphere issue can be avoided by simply visiting at a different time/day.
Looks like a really cool place at night when they have live music. Wish we could have seen that.
I’ll be back next time I’m in town
We tried the special when we went and we weren’t super impressed. We tried the Philly steak fries. They were okay. And the apple dumpling we’re really hard to chew and swallow. The flavor was good you just couldn’t get them in your mouth to chew them. Lol. Kinda weird.
