They added a credit card fee to the price of each item without disclosing it on the menu. Strange business practice. Item rang up as $7.27 versus $6.99. We were taxed on the credit card fee?
I don’t mind spending good money on good food, but when I spend good money on bad food, then that’s another story. We recently had the pleasure of dining in a little restaurant in which the food was absolutely wonderful and the total bill was not much more than at Darrell’s. There, we’d enjoyed a beautifully cooked lamb shank, a shredded beef lunch, a beer, 2 coffees and a soda for little more than here. And even more recently I enjoyed a nice piece of fried haddock on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a good portion of homemade potato chips and it too cost little more than the skinny BLT I had at Darrell’s in which a search party was called out for the B, the L, the T and especially the mayo.
Ok, let’s start at the beginning, shall we?
We haven’t been to Darrell’s in a long time because, well to be honest, they are pretty horrible and overpriced. But we were out with mom who is 89 and wanted a pancake. And there was the new Darrell’s so we thought, let’s just go in, after all, it’s just a pancake.
Well, that tiny little 6″ pancake cost $4.42. Ohmygosh, are they using flour made from gold? One of us had the so called “veggie” omelette that was greasy and stuffed mostly with green pepper, and I had the BLT. When our server dropped off our food, she asked if I’d like more mayo, and when I lifted the bread and could barely see any, I said of course but I should have also requested some bacon, lettuce and tomato because that too was hard to find. It was more like a bread sandwich.
I asked for cole slaw for my side and found an unidentifiable object in the cup. It really freaked me out because it looked like a finger tip but I’m sure it was just a piece of chicken that fell in from somewhere, maybe the sky?
The total bill came to $41.86 with tax. So far I’m not pleased but hey, it’s the cost of eating out in today’s lousy economy. And mom enjoyed her little pancake.
As I mentioned, our server Renee was a delight. Her smile lights up the room and her personality is engaging and warm. Not to be forgotten is her efficiency and concern for her customers.
The ambience was less than I’d expected for a new place. They have two retail spaces, with a counter on one side and tables on the other. The view is of an industrial park and if you sit facing the window at just the right time of day the reflection from the cars parked head on is blinding. Or you can sit outside at one of their curbside parking lot tables. The smell of the exhaust fumes is most refreshing and pairs well with the missing bacon if you get the BLT.
One question I have concerns the two prices if you use cash or credit card. At first I thought it was a credit card surcharge which in today’s economy is very insulting to patrons who are spending a lot of money and paying their own credit card fees. But the 7% tax was added correctly. So, is the lower cash price a discount, and if so shouldn’t it be worth mentioning? When we asked our server, she had no answer.
Well, I gave it the old college try and can say with certainty this is definitely my last visit to any Darrell’s.
And the Food was Perfect.
Darell’s Never disapionts and the Food was Excellent as Always !
