We tried the honey sweet cornbread to start off. The butter is the star, the cornbread was a bit dry and and broke apart as we tried to cut and remove it from the hot pan. It was good but not sure id drop the money for it again. It was hard to eat in pieces.
My group tried several entries. Of the entrees everything was good but nothing stood out as something I would go out of my way to come back for. Brisket: cooked to competition texture, very healthy smoke ring, not as flavorful as I expected considering the smoke ring but it was good. Ribs: Small, very small. Good slightly sweet flavor, pretty solid ribs. Sausage: Big serving, jalapeno and cheese l, moist, pretty solid. Smoked chicken half: moist, deep smoke, flavorful, best entree most likely. Burger: standard burger, good flavor, my sons favorite (sadness), nothing stellar but good.
The sides were all decent. The BBQ beans has a great smoky flavor. I prefer some of the competitions sweeter beans but these were good for what they were. Potatoes au gratin were very good, they take the place of 2 sides if you choose this. It’s cheesy and flavorful. I would recommend this. Mac and cheese were dry and mildly cheesed. Didn’t really taste the jalapeno much. Meh. The fried were shoestring fries, surprisingly good. McDonald’s like. You also get a peice of dried bread for mopping if that’s your thing.
The BBQ sauce is a sweeter version of podnuhs. Very thin but flavorful though to complement the meats. I thought it was pretty good.
Drinks: Tried soda and sweet tea. Sweet tea was pretty sweet but bad flavor. Tasted instant or made with cheap sugar, has the flavor of tea that has a packet or sugar made a the last minute. Longhorns tea it is not. I’ll get soda next time.
The service was great. They were not busy and the server kept up with drinks we needed. She was properly friendly.
Overall I was pretty underwhelmed considering the price. It’s good and worth trying if you are on the fence. I’m not sure that the price premium is worth it over podnuhs personally but their meats are good. Brisket on the verge of being great but they don’t season it well though before smoking.
This was my fourth visit in just two weeks, and that alone should tell you everything you need to know about Country Tavern.
Every single dish has been outstanding. The deviled eggs are classic and perfectly done, the Texas Twinkies are next-level (absolute must-order), and the BBQ ribs are hands-down the best in the region — tender, flavorful, and cooked exactly right.
The lean chopped beef sandwich with the sauce on the side is incredible, letting the quality of the meat shine. Even the sides are memorable: the side salad with their homemade ranch is genuinely crave-able, and both the BBQ beans and green beans are exceptional — not afterthoughts, but stars in their own right.
Service is where this place truly separates itself. Kirsten, Shannon, and Micah were all 10-star servers — friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to be there. And the real secret weapon is the one of the guys, Drew. He’s a seasoned professional who watches every detail, runs the floor with confidence, and gives off true owner-vibes. He keeps the place clean with constant attention to details. You can feel his leadership the moment you walk in, and it shows in every part of the experience.
There is officially no reason for me to drive to the Kilgore, Texas location anymore — Shreveport absolutely nailed it.
If you’re serious about BBQ, this place belongs at the top of your list. I’ll be back again… probably this week.
I’ve been a waitress before, so I understood. I didn’t make a big deal about it. She took us to our table and there were only 2 other small parties in the dining area. We literally sat there for 20 mins. No one came to take our drink orders or even speak. But somehow the waitress managed to refill the drinks for the table next to us.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t try again… but we received absolutely NO service. My family and I left. On our way out of the door, I see the waitress and host just chatting it up. Very disappointing.
