Twelve of us went to dinner on Friday. Two people in the group had recently been there and swore it was amazing, so the rest of us arrived with the enthusiasm of people who genuinely believed good things were about to happen. Cute of us, in hindsight.
Several of us had been there years ago and honestly, the remodel of the restaurant was very nice.
The bartender was brand new and genuinely trying her best, but the two other employees … weren’t. They stood while our group waited for drinks that literally required opening a cooler. When the food arrived, the fish had a ridiculous amount of batter. The fish inside was either cold or tough. The coleslaw was not edible.
I went up to talk to the staff and said, “I’m really sorry but the food is not good at all.” The bartender asked about the drinks and said that I was sorry, they weren’t good either. She apologized and asked how she could do better, and honestly, I just felt bad—she’d been there a week and clearly hadn’t been properly trained. The manager came out and tried, but it was clear she couldn’t do much. So they called…the owner.
Oh boy.
He came barreling down the road like someone had told him we set the building on fire. He stormed in announcing that we said we weren’t paying for our food. We never said that—we just wanted a reasonable compromise.
He said we were rude to the staff. We were actually very kind but yes, we did express our frustration with the situation.
He said all twelve of us demanded to eat at the same time. We never said that.
We calmly suggested paying for our drinks plus 50% of the food. He said it was our fault we weren’t happy and that we should have sent the food back. Considering every single person’s meal was terrible, that clearly would not have been reasonable. One friend mentioned he’d been rooting for their success on Facebook, to which the owner replied, “I don’t care. Leave and never come back!”
Well okay then.
This was, without question, the worst food and service experience any of us has ever had. We ended up paying 100% of our bill. They did give us free drink coupons but then said we couldn’t use them. The owner was unprofessional, rude, and wildly uninterested in anything resembling customer service. Message received—we will NEVER be back.

We came in and sat at a table. No service for 15 min. So walked up to the bar and asked if we wanted food. If we did it would be 90 min wait. We had 1 drink and left. Too long of wait with not a packed restaurant.

Quiet little place. We used to rent out a cabin here years ago. I’m glad to hear they are fixing things up. Will definitely be back. Played a bit of pool and darts while there. Food and Nar service was great.

The cove is truly a gem tucked away on Fishtrap Lake in the heart of the Wisconsin Northwoods. Their food is excellent, their bar is fully stocked and the service is friendly and personable. Friday night fish fries are outstanding. Eating in their rustic dining area will take you back to the olden days and a simpler time. Not to be missed.

The owners, Dave and Julie, are the greatest. The atmosphere is awesome. Food is always fresh and hot. Love to sit by the fireplace and look out onto the lake. Great place to relax and unwind.
