We’ve been here 4 separate times (yes this past month and yes it’s that good) and every. Single. Time. The service and the food is a hit! I can’t tell you what to order because everything is made with SOUL! You’ll taste the love behind any bite you have here.
Not to mention super reasonably priced plates and SUPER well served. Places like these are rare. Places like these deserve business! This is a definite stop my friends!
We ordered the green chilaquiles with chicken and the huevos rancheros. The food tasted amazing but it took longer than expected for a half-empty restaurant. By the time we were almost finished, the side corn tortillas finally arrived, after requesting them several times.
We had fresh coffee, but when it came time for refills, the server was noticeably absent. We watched other tables receive full service, including chips and salsa, while nothing was brought to our table. When we were ready to pay, the server was nowhere to be found.
This location has previously been a vegetarian restaurant and a pizza place, and it shows. The Mexican restaurant appears to have reused the furniture and décor, which lacks the vibrant colors and warmth typically associated with Mexican culture. The décor feels inconsistent; tacky paintings mixed with industrial furniture, while the only clear Mexican touches were found near the restroom. The music and food felt Mexican, but unfortunately, the service did not reflect the warmth and hospitality you’d expect.
Maybe we just had a bad server, but overall, the experience didn’t leave us wanting to return. The place has a lot of potential given its location, but for now, we’ll pass.
Good luck next time.
Their menu includes all the classic favorites—along with tasty appetizers and breakfast options—offering something for everyone. Although we weren’t given a drink menu, we did try the house margarita, and it paired perfectly with the chips and salsa.
The standout dish for us was the pozole. Hands down, it’s the best in San Antonio. We’ve tried pozole at several restaurants throughout the area, and El Catrín’s truly stands above the rest. We’ll be returning for it alone.
If you’re looking for a solid Mexican restaurant with great food and a welcoming vibe, we highly recommend El Catrín Mexican Cuisine.
I had an early dinner here and loved everything about it. The food (vegetarian enchiladas, tres leches cake) was amazing. The service was prompt and friendly. And I loved the slightly understated decor.
The “La Catrina Margarita” was a bit underwhelming. I would recommend the Vampiro instead. But everything else was much better than I expected.
