A Taste of the Past | Williams Tavern in Washington – Only In Arkansas

While the menu today may not feature 1800s delicacies, Williams Tavern is hands-down one of my favorite places to eat in all of Arkansas.

We went to Washington state park in SW Arkansas for a day trip. We noticed the Tavern across the street from the Visitor Center. So, after a long morning of touring old homestead, we stopped in for a late lunch. And earlier couple had said to get the Chicken Fried steak, and so we did. we shared it along with fried Squash and mashed potatoes with gravy. Maria brought us jalapeno, cornbread to have with our meal and it was good. But for me, the best part was the chicken fried steak, which was huge and the fried.Squash. don’t forget to get the peach cobbler, if there is any left. It was a nice surprise on a State Park we had never visited before.

Some of the best food we have gotten at a restaurant anywhere in America!!! The sides spot on perfect, the chicken excellent, the ribs were good (not the best but good), the hamburger legit, and the peach cobbler was put of this world. All of it tasted like they make it in house. So worth checking out.

The staff was wonderful, the aesthetic was beautiful, and the band on the porch was also lovely. The food was worse than school food. No flavor, driest piece of pork of the whole loin, and im not sure how those sweet potatoes got that consistency. I’m hoping it was an off day because I show other very positive reviews but I would say if they have a limited menu stay away.

Stop in during the Festival and had a bite to eat. Didn’t make it in time for the buffet. The hamburger were wonderful nice to know some place still use real meat. Will definitely try and come back next time we are in the area.

This is the main attraction here . Some of the best food I ate . And some fine southern food around . The lunch special is always the best choice. And the customer service and food both was the best , first class . And your eating at a place been open 4 years before Arkansas was even a state . If these walls could talk the stories they tell . So always stop in for some good food and gifts shop and really awsome place to be in .

Great place to stop by. Takes you back to the 1800s. The food was good. The service was excellent. The entire town is full of such great history. It’s definitely worth a stop.

We ate there three days in a row, trying different meals each day and all the food was great and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The Earthquake Cake was by far the best cake I’ve had in a while. The prices were very reasonable as well.

In the past this place had excellent food, but we were greatly disappointed when we met up with family from across the state. I ordered the chicken fried steak, with gravy on the side. The steak was overcooked, but the gravy was horrific. It was full of sugar! When I questioned the waitress, she said they always made their gravy with sugar! I’ve lived in the south all my life and made tons of gravy, ordered tons of gravy, and not ONCE have I ever had or made white gravy with sugar! I’m not saying there’s not a recipe out there somewhere with sugar, I just have NEVER had any. It was awful, and what about unsuspecting diabetics? Then we ordered cobbler which we’ve ordered and loved many times in the past. Expecting at least it to be good, considering the price of $7.00, we were dumbfounded when we were brought about three tablespoons of cobbler with most of it a very thick, stale tasting crust, and less than a half small scoop of ice cream. While the waitress was efficient, she was not very friendly, but seemed overly stressed, dismissing our concerns we voiced. We didn’t want to upset her further, and we were celebrating a birthday and wanted to remain upbeat, so we didn’t complain. Instead I’m sharing our opinion here. I wish them well, and would only hope they can return to the marvelous cooks they used to have in the past. As for now, unless we hear things have changed, we won’t be back.

This place is worth a trip to Washington in and of itself.

I planned a trip in as a sort of side mission on my way to the crater of diamonds and the crystal mine with my family and I expected it to be just that: a side mission to pass time until we could check into our air bnb. But it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

Robin, our waitress was a gem, friendly, polite and so warm.

When I looked at the menu, which is just a simple print on office paper, I noticed that the prices for the entrees were pretty reasonable, which usually makes me suspicious of food quality. In Houston, where I live, at a plethora of restaurants, a chicken tender entree for 8.99 is literally frozen strips and fries from Sam’s club. Nothing special and child sized.

I was surprised by the tavern even though I already knew it had 5 star reviews.

We ordered:

Jalapeno peppers
A Reuben with fries
A chicken sandwich with fries
A bowl of broccoli cheese soup with a ham and cheese sandwich
Two plates of chicken tenders and fries
And the house special, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and black eyed peas.

First, the poppers were home made, and the best I have never had. The soup was home made, the Reuben was very well put together and my husband ate it like he had never had a meal before in his life. The chicken was actual like white meat chicken breast, hand battered and fried, and were huge and perfectly cooked. The meatloaf was phenomenal and rivaled my granny’s, which is truly saying something special. Peas had great flavor and the home made bread served (especially the corn bread) was very good as well.

Go in, eat, buy some apple cinnamon jam, and tip well. You wont be sorry.
