Maria Rondeau and JuanMa Calderón of Boston’s award-winning Celeste (Eater Boston’s 2018 Restaurant of the Year and Esquire Best New Restaurant) and Esmeralda in Vermont (Esquire Best New Restaurant), open La Royal, their newest Peruvian restaurant down the block from their Cambridge home. While at Celeste JuanMa recreates his mother’s rustic home-cooking that he grew up with in Lima, his menu at La Royal explores the varied cuisines throughout Peru, offering original takes on dishes from the country’s different regions. They’re also bringing the same spirit of curation and collaboration from both Celeste and Esmeralda to this project, working on new cocktails, and art collaborations that make the project more meaningful.

A lovely meal with exceptional service! We made our reservation online and were extremely happy with our meal. The staff was so helpful, and even offered to sit us at a table instead of our bar reservation. The meat was so tender and cooked exactly as requested. The mocktail selection was also stunning. The restaurant itself was welcoming and cozy, with live music at the perfect volume to enjoy it and still talk to the people you are sitting with. Highly recommend stopping by and enjoying a meal here. Reservations recommended especially on a holiday.

We enjoyed our night at la royal but wish there was an option to pick a table versus bar seating when making a reservation. Came for a date night where we were hoping to talk a lot but ended up having to sit at the bar which was extremely cramped. It was hard to have a good conversation with noise levels and the chairs at the bar bounce or feel completely unstable / can flex or bend into the person sitting next to you. The food was to die for and the servers were very nice, but I’m also glad we were both fine with smoke in the restaurant. It is extremely hazy inside from food being cooked right in front of you / the bar which isn’t for everyone. It was a great experience and time but I probably wouldn’t come back here again given the price for the environment.

The place is a bit dark but cozy, and the service was bright and friendly. We ordered the mixed ceviche, grilled shrimp, seafood noodles, and cilantro rice with duck, and everything was delicious. We just wished the stir-fried noodle dish had more noodles and was less soupy. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner at LA ROYAL.

La Royal is an excellent spot if you’re looking to explore Chifa (Peruvian-Chinese) cuisine, and it delivers a truly memorable dining experience. Their blue cod ceviche is a must-try — tangy, limey, and bursting with fresh, vibrant flavors. The tacu tacu de verduras was another standout; simple, comforting, and elevated by a wonderfully soothing broth. It’s the kind of dish that feels perfect on a cold, rainy night.
They also offer a great selection of vegetarian options, making it easy for everyone at the table to find something they’ll love. If you’re curious about Chifa flavors or just want a delicious, unique meal, I’d highly recommend giving La Royal a try.

Loved this place. Got the leche de tigre and was delicious. Also the papa la huancaina of course to start. I had my lomo saltado which you cant go wrong with. The duck also. Make sure to top it off with some chicha morada. Overall the food was good. Recommend if you want to have a nice dinner out. The outside patio was so cozy. I loved it. We had a late night dinner and the vibe was spectacular.

Most dishes missed the mark. The tiradito de tuna apaltado was overwhelmingly citrusy, ruining the fish. The causa de tuna was bland, the pastel choclo carne too sweet, and the tacu tacu a lo macho overly salty. The only redeeming dish was the arroz con pato. Desserts disappointed too: the flan had a hard bottom, and the mousse was just passable. Overall, everything was overpriced and underwhelming.

We went here for a wedding anniversary and were not very impressed by the food or the service which is quite surprising given how the reviews were quite high. I do not like ceviche which knocked out 2/3 of the appetizer menu. However, for the remaining 1/3 we got three Appetizers which were quite good – Shrimp/ pineapple skewers, polenta, and scallops. My passionfruit mocktail was very good. The entrées were overall OK. My husband got the cod dish in the Peruvian/Chinese section and I got the taca taca with risotto. The risotto was overcooked, tasted like it was made with old rice, and was very starchy. Servers did not check in to see if we like the food or having questions, and did not seem very enthusiastic. It was also quite strange that we wanted to communicate the restaurant about our tardiness, but we were not able to
contact anyone despite multiple phone calls and text messages. And what was even more surprising was that when we got there it was not busy. I think if you like ceviche and are willing to get small plates you will likely be fine

Excellent Peruvian-Asian fusion restaurant! Passion fruit cocktail was great here. Tried the tuna sashimi appetizer which was very well done. We tried the stir fried vegetarian noodles and the tacu tacu a la mocha- which was the standout dish. Great food overall. Lot of seafood options and few vegetarian options too.

Great experience, we booked an outdoor table, but it was supposed to rain while at dinner. They found a table for us, and made sure we were comfortable. The food was fantastic. It’s open kitchen concept, and everything coming out smelled so good. I would definitely be back to try other thing on the menu. Everything on the menu sounded so good. My favorites were the ceviche and the grilled shrimp with pineapple.
