Reviews
Walking into The Picked Onion feels a bit like stumbling into an old fraternity house reunion you weren’t invited to—but somehow still got a drink at. There’s a definite good-ole-boy vibe humming in the background, the kind that smells faintly of nostalgia, entitlement, and bar stools that have heard decades of opinions no one asked for.
The owner gives off a slightly elitist energy—like you should already know how things work here before you walk in. It’s not hostile, just… noticeable. If confidence were a seasoning, this place would be generously salted.
That said, I couldn’t stop laughing at the video game golf tournament situation. Truly. Watching grown men take digital golf very seriously while perched in a bar with drinks in hand was peak Renton absurdity, and honestly? Kind of iconic. I don’t know if it’s meant to be ironic or sincere, but it was unintentionally entertaining in the best way.
This isn’t a place trying to be trendy or reinvent itself—and it definitely isn’t trying to impress you. For better or worse, it knows exactly what it is. If you’re into quirky local color, people-watching, and a vibe that feels frozen in time (with a joystick), you’ll probably get a kick out of it.
Come curious. Stay amused. Bring a sense of humor—and maybe a visor. ⛳️
The afternoon/dinner crowd is typically a solid group of regulars who laugh and smile and joke around. Most people are very welcoming and look out for each other if someone gets belligerent. Mostly it’s an older crowd (35+ I’m guessing), but I see younger people welcomed as well. I actually ended up meeting two of my favorite people in the world here 🙂 Though I should preface I’m not typically here very late and acknowledge the late night crowd may be different. I read a review saying the older women that frequent here are garbage but I couldn’t disagree more based on my experiences.
There’s 4 dart boards with plenty of space to shoot ($1/person), 2 pool tables ($0.75), and every seat has a good view of a television to watch the games without there being wall to wall television sets like some sports bars. There’s also pull tabs, a claw machine, Golden Tee Golf cabinet, Galaga arcade cabinet, ATM and change machine. Makes the vibe feel pretty chill.
Although I was skeptical of eating here initially (homemade food and dive bar were not concepts I had experienced together), everything I’ve tried is amazing. The daily specials are all on point and available til 10pm. Only exception is the Tues steak special which starts at 5pm – completely fair since the steak and loaded potato are huge!
To the reviews on wait time for food – it tends to depend on how busy they are. If you walk in and it’s packed, you might ask the bar staff an approximate wait time or how many orders are before you. There’s only one cook so if everyone is ordering food (most common on Tuesday steak night and Wednesday night trivia) there will be a long wait. There’s also only one bar staff the majority of the time and they have to literally walk the orders back to the kitchen so, again, if it’s unusually packed, have some understanding.
Also a huge thank you to the owner for his support for our community. He let us host a knit-a-thon to raise money for food charities. He also lets people use the space to celebrate special occasions. The long bar tables make it easy to accommodate small groups of people.
