Plus the family that runs things soooo sweet, make sure you are friendly when you visit, they deserve the world!
That quest led us to Thai Nghiep Ky Mi Gia, tucked away in the heart of San Francisco’s Sunset District.
The moment we stepped in, the air was rich with the scent of simmering broth. We were seated instantly, greeted with a smile that felt like an old friend welcoming us home. Then came the bowls–piping hot, fragrant, and full of flavor. One sip of the broth and we were transported straight back to the bustling streets of Saigon, where time slowed and every bite was a memory reborn.
The atmosphere was laid-back yet full of life, the service warm and attentive, and every spoonful felt like an embrace from the past.
For anyone seeking not just a meal, but a journey–I wholeheartedly recommend it.
The flavor of the soup is not deep and aromatic enough. I think the herbs used are not sufficient in kind or amount. The duck leg looks just golden from the frying, not black brown from the herbs stewing for many hours. The meat is well cooked, soft and tasty but does not taste as good may be due to the absence of some spices. (Don’t ask me what spices. Only the chefs know.)
Those of you who enjoyed this Duck Stew soup in Saigon in the 60’s and before 1975 know exactly what I mean. Our family favorite restaurant then was the Mỹ Phụng Mì Gia close by the Roundabout “Ngă 6 Sàigòn”.
Will I return to Thái Nghiệp Ký? Absolutely YES. Their soup is good even if not fully match my search. I don’t complain just keep on searching.
All in all we all should lend our support to this family owned local restaurant.
Service is impressively fast, even when it’s busy, and everything comes out hot and well prepared. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable, which makes it an even better value.
If you’re looking for delicious food, quick service, and affordable prices, this place is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended.
We’re recommended by friends to try. Wide selection of Chinese-Vietnamese noodle soups, with egg noodle options. Not sure which number item on menu as i just ordered exactly picture shows online. We got:
Mix combination meat with wonton and thin egg noodles – soup on the side. Also added one duck leg and plate of fried fish cake.
— Noodle bowl comes with good portion of noodle, big filled wonton, mix of toppings : shrimp, ground pork, kidney, mini fish ball, crispy shrimp crackers. Simple dish but really good. I like the fish ball which must be house made. The shrimp crackers’s just ok – not special. The soup bowl separately on side. Have one bite of noodle and one sip of fresh soup. Just so good. You may find the broth is too simple, can’t compare to the full flavored Pho broth. But i think it’s simply make it a great dish really. However in my opinion, It will be perfect if they can add some greens like bokchoy or carrot. 4.9/5
On table you will see some extra seasoning sauce like with vinegar, jalapeño pickles , chili oil, hoisin, sriracha and soy sauce.
— Duck leg’s braised so it’s very soft, fell out of bone easily. Ppl will think it’s chicken. As duck’s usually tougher. I think The way it’s cooked long enough to soften the meat. 5/5
— Fried fish cake: very soft but needs more flavor. 3.5/5
— Vietnamese coffee: perfect!!!!! 5/5
Overalls: good dine in experience. Customer service ‘s great / very friendly. It can get very busy in the lunch time – Parking may be difficult. Paid street parking and make sure to park closed by or in front of restaurant so you can keep eyes on car. Restroom is clean.
Note: Some customers said there’s complimentary hot soy milk. As i already ordered the Vietnamese coffee and had not been offered about the soy milk. So i will check out to try it next time and the spicy satay beef noodle soup with special peanut broth.

Overall: One of my go to spots when I’m wanting a good bowl of Pho. You just have to go before they close at 630.
