We recently tried out this upscale Mexican restaurant, and overall it was a good experience — just not quite great.
Let’s start with the food: I ordered the beef fajitas and the Enchiladas Taja. The fajita steak was definitely the standout — perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The rest of the meal was tasty but didn’t quite deliver that “wow” factor you’d expect at this price point. And surprisingly, this was the first Tex-Mex restaurant I’ve ever been to that didn’t offer complimentary chips and salsa. That was a bit of a letdown (I mean, isn’t that half the fun?).
The frozen margaritas were thick, icy, and refreshing — though so frozen it was a bit of a workout trying to drink it through a straw. Maybe they should start serving them with a spoon!
Now, the service was wonderful. Our waitress was an absolute doll — kind, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care that we were happy. The manager was also visible and friendly, which you don’t always see these days.
The atmosphere, however, left me a little puzzled. The decor was upscale and cozy, but the music was a lively Spanish disco vibe that didn’t quite match the ambiance — fun, just maybe not the right fit. The tables are very close together, so be prepared to make new friends (or at least learn what your neighbors are ordering).
In the end, nothing was bad — the food was solid, the service was excellent, and the space was stylish. But if I’m craving Tex-Mex again, I’ll probably head somewhere else in Sumter where the prices are a little friendlier and the chips and salsa flow freely.
Dining only by reservation!!
My wife and I recently visited Gahnzales, a new upscale Tex-Mex restaurant, and overall we walked away impressed. The food quality stood out immediately, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff clearly took pride in their work. While there are a few small areas that could be refined, this place already feels like it’s on its way to being something special.
We started with the dip, which I’d rate around a 7/10. The cheese itself was excellent — creamy, flavorful, and rich, easily an 8 or 9 on its own. We added pork for an extra $3, but that part fell a little short. The pork was sweet, tender, and delicious by itself, but it didn’t pair all that well with the cheese, and the portion size didn’t quite justify the upcharge.
For my entrée, I went with the beef fajitas — and they were phenomenal, a strong 9/10. The beef (which looked like flank steak) was tender, juicy, and seasoned just right — enough to enhance the flavor without overpowering it. The homemade tortillas were soft, fresh, and clearly made in-house, tying the dish together perfectly. Easily one of the best fajita experiences I’ve had anywhere.
My wife ordered the Enchiladas Tejas. She said the meat was extremely tender, and the queso on top — the same great cheese from our dip — was a nice touch. The enchiladas came with a red sauce that didn’t add much in terms of flavor, and she found the dish a little too meat-heavy. She mentioned that a fresh element, like pico de gallo or a bright salsa, would have helped balance it out. While some diners might love how hearty it was, she rated it about a 7/10 overall.
Service was friendly and professional overall. Our server made a few upsell suggestions, which I actually appreciated since it shows good training and attentiveness. The only small hiccup was that my wife’s drink went empty for part of the meal, but the restaurant was very busy, so it’s understandable.
A standout moment came from Maggie, who wasn’t even our server but still went out of her way to help us. She made sure we were added into the system, checked in to see how everything was, and genuinely asked for feedback. She mentioned that everything at Gahnzales is made to order and nothing comes in frozen — and it shows. You can taste the freshness in every bite. Maggie also told us that because of how fresh everything is, the menu rotates and changes regularly, which is a great touch that keeps things interesting. Employees like her are a major asset to the restaurant and help create a lasting positive impression.
We ended the meal with the churro cheesecake — a perfect 10/10. I’m a big cheesecake fan (not usually into churro-style desserts), but this one completely exceeded expectations. It was smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced — hands down one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time.
Overall, Gahnzales offers an elevated Tex-Mex experience that’s both fresh and authentic. The attention to detail, made-to-order dishes, and rotating menu set it apart from other spots in the area. With just a few tweaks in service pacing and balance in certain dishes, this could easily become a five-star destination.
