Ausgezeichnet!
We were looking for something german, and this place came up… round trip, it was almost fifty miles out of our way. Why not… One is the best meals we had on our current travels! Highly recomend.

This place is awesome! Food is fantastic! A very relax, down to Earth, German restaurant, with very nice and friendly service.

The menu is not huge, and to the point, but is goooood. I tried the JÄGERSCHNITZEL with KÄSESPÄTZLE NOODLES (my favorites ever) and my wife went with the SAUSAGE PLATTER (assortment of 3 wursts & 3 mustards) with WARM POTATO SALAD (she says best potato salad ever). For dessert we tried both the APPLE STRUDEL and the day special NOCKERLN (lemon meringue or better described as warm, baked soufflé rather than a crisp meringue topping). Please, don’t ask me what I liked the most, because everything was perfect!!

This is one of those cozy places that you will want to visit several times… And if you are local, you probably will be eating there in a weekly basis. Highly recommended!

Cherry on top? The drinks menu is good. Between beers and wines, again, short list, but to the point and nicely done.

The food was good, the service was great, and the live music was too loud. I usually don’t go to pubs, so the music was a little off-putting. However, this local spot had great food. I would return if we are ever back in Seymour. Don’t miss out on the apple strudel!

Let me start by saying I wanted to love this place. We drove for an hour to get there and the building is so cool and historic. We did have reservations and they had our table ready for us all good so far. I looked at the menu online as I’ve never been there before and saw they had Brisket sandwiches on rye.
I was so happy with my already prepared food order, but the the server quickly dashed my hopes and told me that that’s a different menu than the supper menu that’s fine. I’ll have the brisket dinner then I said we ordered the big pretzels for appetizers and they were great and we wished we had ordered more. my dinner came the brisket which was very flaky and tender with the braised carrots, which were very good and fries which were fine. The brisket was very, very strong with salt. I was unable to eat it by itself so I asked the server if I could get some bread and she was so glad to tell me that no bread at suppertime. Only bread at lunchtime at our table had ordered grilled cheese sandwiches. On bread And hamburgers on buns. But I was not allowed to have a piece of bread with the brisket, we asked if we could get a bun she said unhappily and said she would check. She returned to the table with a cold bun. I was thankful and put some on it to eat my brisket as we got noticed we were charged two dollars for the bun. Most of our group were happy with their food . The food is not authentic German food but German food with an Indiana flair which is fine. She also explained how their lunch menu and dinner menu are totally different. So I believe they destroy all the bread from lunch before they serve their dinner. Like I said, I really wanted to love the place. But I do enjoy sharing the story of “no bread for you“

Just off the main drag in Seymour is a mom and pop joint that makes homemade German fare. While the lunch menu is short it makes up for it in taste! The owner has taken care not only to provide awesome food, but has also taken the time to preserve the history of the building. You couldn’t ask for better company or food- I can’t wait to come back in the evening to enjoy the dinner menu!

Schwätzer’s German Restaurant in Seymour is an absolute gem. From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. The warm, cozy atmosphere made it feel like we were dining in someone’s home rather than a restaurant—and the staff were just as inviting. Friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the food, they offered fantastic suggestions that made our meal unforgettable.

We started with the brisket egg rolls, and wow—just wow. Crispy on the outside, packed with tender brisket, sauerkraut, and melted Swiss on the inside. It’s the kind of appetizer that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate how good it is.

For mains, we went with the Jägerschnitzel and the Rouladen. The Jägerschnitzel was perfectly breaded and topped with a rich mushroom gravy that was pure comfort food. The Rouladen, with its savory blend of beef, pickle, onion, carrot, and bacon, was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. Both dishes were hearty, satisfying, and incredibly well-prepared.

Overall, the experience at Schwätzer’s was top-notch. Great food, an inviting atmosphere, and service that felt personal and thoughtful. If you’re anywhere near Seymour, this place is a must-visit.

Just stopped in for some beers and pretzels tonight, but the food is terrific!
Being vegan, we get the portabello mushroom with Brussels sprouts and carrots when we actually eat here.
Update: Another nice meal (always the same thing). The mushroom was cooked to perfection. The red cabbage was perfect, not mushy like some places. Great service!

We were excited to find a German restaurant just off I-65, having grown up in Europe. Despite the German roots of so many in the Midwest, it’s getting harder to find German restaurants around.
The location has a lot of character, the staff was friendly, and I trust by the positive reviews that the local folks love the food.

But to set expectations, the food is a very Americanized version of German cuisine.
The pierogis were fried instead of poached, the sausages were grilled instead of boiled, the apple strudel is really an apple turnover…you get the idea. Certainly not your grandmother’s home cooking.

Ugh. There are a lot of issues with the food quality, seasoning and preparation here. Has anyone on “the team” ever been to Germany? If so, they would be doing things differently and what they’re doing now has been called out across many reviews but nothing seems to change. It’s unfortunate. They’re cutting a lot of corners and I doubt we’ll ever be back.

Amazing food!! We had a large portion of the menu and everything was delicious. The dopplebach on tap was delicious. This place just opened and I wouldn’t expect it to stay hidden long. Definitely get the potato soup and get a plate of fries with the beer cheese to share on the table.
