The food alone is enough for me to go back, but it’s the friendly staff that makes the entire experience worth it. This is the place to go.
Hands Down.
There is no shortage of great Mexican in Louisville, but I really need to single this out as my favorite. Before I would have singled it out because of its proximity to where we used to live by Westport Village. (In fact, we had to drive past another Mexican restaurant to get to Cancun!) Now that we’ve moved to J-Town we still find ourselves making the trip on a regular basis.
For months before Cancun opened we’d drive by and I’d anxiously look at the building, waiting for that “Now Open” sign. I think we visited the first weekend they were opened. When we walked in we were greeted by Mario (Owner/Manager?). Mario is a very awesome, very friendly guy who has never met a stranger, and who never forgets a face. He took us to our table and welcomed us and (of course) gave us our freshly made chips and salsa.
The menu at Cancun is sizable, ranging from traditional to house specialties. You can also customer order items (within reason) and they are very happy to accommodate. My favorite Mexican meal is street tacos. Basically, two corn tortillas, slightly deep fried, with meat (chicken, steak, or chorizo (my favorite), topped with onion and cilantro. A lime wedge on the side for an accent. (I just made myself REALLY hungry!) Mario was able to have it made and it was absolutely OUTSTANDING.
A couple other favorites are the Pork Chili Verde (an amazing meal) and the Juan Especial (I’ve uploaded pictures of both)
The service at Cancun has almost always been great. The only problem we had was Oaks Day, 2017…which happened to coincide with Cinco de Mayo. Having only been open a couple months at this point, there was a bit of chaos and confusion that day, but Mario hung with us and made sure we were taken care of. Aside from that we’ve always had a great experience.
The restaurant is brightly colored with a lot of yellow and orange, and the decor has a pretty genuine feel. There is a wall the divides bar and the tables, which consist of 4-top tables and booths. On Friday and Saturdays, on occasion, there’s DJ the plays a wide variety of music and even takes requests!
If you’re looking for great non-corporate Mexican, give Cancun a try. Ask for Mario and tell him that Jim sent you.
The food was fair, the margarita was terrible but our server was great!
