Update: hadn’t visited in a few months; still fantastic.
Holland’s, I love you.
I needed a happy place when I visit Suffolk, and I didn’t have one until I visited Holland’s.
Nice, healthy variety of menu items, though I wish there was a chicken fried steak. I had the Thursday special, baked chicken. Came with dressing and two sides. Essentially a quarter chicken, with dressing and two sides, white or dark meat. Roasted well enough, so it came off the bone nicely. Most places remove the organs when they clean the chicken, but Holland’s doesn’t, and I like that organ-y, iron-y snack. Came with a slice of cake; took the cake to- go but didn’t eat it since I gave it to a homeless person.
Clean place, so clean. People we making cakes in the back. Cooks ran the food. People were super friendly.
And now I end up there today for a plate of spaghetti.

Staff was so nice and the Christmas decor was so cute and homey. But the food was entirely unseasoned, there was almost no champagne in the mimosas, coffee was watery, and eggs were very overcooked. I ordered over easy and they came out well done.

You know, I kind of feel bad about this review. The staff and owner were as nice as can be, the atmosphere is really quaint and cozy, but the food was somewhere between alright and meh. Everything we had was bland. The meatloaf was dry and mostly bread, very similar to oily toast with ketchup. The hamburger steak, considering it was covered in a brown onion gravy, had no flavor. Nothing was good enough for me to want to go back. Unfortunately real southern food is hard to come by these days, and It would be nice if the people who do it , would do it right.

@BQueen2U: Went there today after a 20 year gap. I was si disappointed ! My entire dinner was cold. I ordered liver and potatoes, fried okra and the cake was stale. My Brunswick stew was old and musty. My husbands waffle was cold. His chuck and sweet potato fries was the old hot item. I’m never coming back.

how to taste this night for collard greens went to Boogies and the kitchen was closed so I went down to Holland’s and order the collard greens and they were delicious. I was impressed with the inside the decor was very nice. The only reason I couldn’t give this post a 5 is because the only thing that I had was the collard greens.

Five stars all the way for Holland’s in Suffolk, VA! This cozy spot on North Commerce Street is a true Southern treasure. Their roast chicken is the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate how perfectly seasoned and tender it is. Pair it with a side of slow-cooked cabbage or they’re amazing butter beans (when in season), and you’ve got a plate that feels like home.
But what really makes Holland’s shine is the people. The owner and staff are the heart of the place—genuinely kind, welcoming, and always ready with a smile or a great recommendation. Whether you’re a regular or just passing through, they treat you like family. Between the food and the folks, Holland’s isn’t just a restaurant —it’s a community staple.
