Today was a beautiful travel day for our family! We decided to journey from Baltimore to New Jersey to visit Sahara Sam’s (formerly known as Big Kahuna), an Instagram find by my wife. With spring break upon us, we thought it would be a great opportunity to enjoy some fun together, including the grandparents and kids. While I must say that Sahara Sam’s is a place worth visiting, be prepared for the crowds!
After leaving the water park, I did my usual search for a Black-owned restaurant and came across a place called Embrace, located about six miles away. Based on the reviews and pictures, it seemed like a moderately upscale spot, so we decided to check it out, even asking if there was a dress code since we were coming straight from the park.
Upon arrival, we found Embrace nestled in a lovely community shopping center, complete with live music that set a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hospitality was genuine; we were greeted with smiles and a level of care that reminded me of Southern hospitality.
We ordered two appetizers: the angel lobster eggs (what some might call deviled eggs) and the seafood rolls. As someone who enjoys cooking and has high expectations for Black-owned restaurants, I was eager to taste their offerings. Unfortunately, the angel eggs were a bit too liquidy and sweet for my liking, earning a 3 out of 10. The seafood rolls also left me wanting more, as they were lacking in seafood and came drizzled with a Creole sauce; I would rate those a 2 out of 10.
Despite the appetizers not hitting the mark, the ambience and live music kept our spirits high. However, our main courses took quite a while to arrive. We were seated around 4:15 PM, enjoyed the appetizers quickly, but didn’t receive our main dishes until around 6:10 PM, and they came out at staggered times. I had to eat slowly just to enjoy dinner with my family, but I also didn’t want my meal to get cold. I ordered chicken and waffles—my usual go-to when traveling. While it was my first time trying it in New Jersey, I’d give it a 6 out of 10. It was pretty basic, and instead of wings, I received chicken tenders that tasted like they were from a store.
Unfortunately, the delay meant that my mother-in-law didn’t eat at all, and my wife’s lollipop lamb chops were a bit fatty, though the house-made sauce was delicious—I’d rate the lamb chops a 5 out of 10. My father was the last to receive his meal, enjoying a turkey wing that he rated a solid 5 out of 10.
While the manager did come over to explain the delays due to a large party, it was disappointing. I understand the challenges that come with busy nights, but there should be a way to ensure timely service for all customers.
It truly breaks my heart to share this, as I felt the staff were really nice, and I had high hopes for our meal after a long day at the water park. I want to be clear: I’m not discouraging anyone from visiting Embrace; I believe in supporting Black-owned businesses, especially in today’s economy. However, if you’re a foodie like me, just keep these experiences in mind when you decide to visit.
The pricing upon 1st glance seems fair and reasonable. I chose the Turkey wings with an (s) at the End, meaning more than One. I waited 1hr 1/2 for A turkey wing Yes 1. Now It was the Best turkey Wing I’ve ever tasted by far. It was accompanied with 2 small baby size sides. Everything was seasoned to perfection. But I felt Like Chris Rock asking,” How much for 1 more Rib?” They dont offer table rolls or Cornbread considering you are waiting for what seems like eternity for them to play duck duck goose in what seems like they are doing in the kitchen in catching the turkey and plucking the feathers off one turkey Wing. The pricing is misleading for the portion size you actual receive verse whats listed.
The Food is Good, but they Literally leave you wanting more, because you literally have appetizer portions. FOOD is good But it’s not worth the 2 hr cooking and waiting time.
But I would come back if they tweaked a few things. Bigger portions, less wait time, more heating, better table setting than the dollar store plastic flame candle. Make it worth our money.
•This restaurant is stunning. Beautifully decorated, gorgeous colors. Light jazz playing.
•Plenty of menu options that all sounded incredible, hard to decide.
•Such wonderful service, go out of there way to make sure you’re having a lovely experience.
I ordered the turkey wings, with greens & mac and cheese. Every single part of the meal was delicious. They even gave me a few chicken wings just for funsies. Well seasoned and tender meats. Greens were very flavorful. Mac and cheese was delectable.
My friends had the BBQ wings, shrimp & grits and the seafood combo. We all had a bit of each others food. The crab cakes were MOSTLY crab in the best way possible, and another friend ended up ordering some after trying it.
Grabbed a slice of sweet potato cheesecake to go and it was PERFECTION. Lightly, creamy, delicious.
