First time here, arrived for an early dinner, @ 5PM. The winter weather might have helped keep the place was being packed. Nonetheless, I was greeted upon entry and chose a seat at the bar. The hostess was pulling triple duty, she was my bartender and waitress too. Shoutout to her cause she did her thang!! Lol. Also, another member of staff checked on me during the course of my meal.
Ordered a drink to start, the blackberry kiss & the pork belly appetizer. The blackberry kiss was smooth and delicious. Had to order a second round. That pork belly was like that… the portion was entree sized. Although it had a little too much bbq sauce for my liking, the balance between the bold sauce and the saltiness of the pork belly is perfect. The creamed corn really stood out; buttery charred corn kernels…. did not stand a chance (I’m not the biggest corn eater either). It stole the show, it needs to be added to their side dish lineup!
Ordered a side of the pimento mac and cheese. Was surprised at how well it turned out. I haven’t had pimento cheese too often, but this dish works!! It’s has the consistency of homemade baked mac and cheese with the crisp cheese top layer.
Let me tell ya about that beef short rib tho… I can appreciate the fork tenderness, the fat that melts in mouth, with the right about of gravy. The short rib came dressed with mashed potatoes, collard greens and roasted root veggies. The mashed potatoes were decent, no complaints, paired well with beef and gravy. The greens were perfect, simmered right, neither too salty or bland, paired well with the dish overall. The roasted root veggies included pearl onions, carrots, maybe zucchini or turnips, were caramelized with care, added texture and an earthy depth of flavor. Overall, this dish was top-tier, I highly recommend.
I will definitely be back for the West African shrimp and grits!
The only thing to be aware of is that the restaurant adds a default 20% service charge to the bill, which felt a bit much. I’ve attached a photo of our receipt. Despite that, the food was so incredible that we would still highly recommend it.”
