Tried out Hamaei Japanese Restaurant for a weekend dinner. Seems to be an all Japanese staff. They have omakase for two ($100/person) but reservations are required.

– Deluxe sushi ($34.00) – 9 nigiri, 1/2 tuna and 1/2 salmon roll. Good quality but on the small side. Best pieces were the bluefin red, hotate and amaebi. Nice touch frying the shrimp head
– Chopped scallop ($7.50) – standard
– Bluefin negitoro ($9.75) – good quality
– Umejiso ($4.95) – nice tartness
– Tamago ($4.95) – decent
– Double dragon roll ($17.95)
– Salmon oshi ($18.00) – solid, touch of heat

Fish was fresh, portions are on the smaller end.

Very yummy sushi restaurant! It’s a small spot with really nice people. The fish was fresh, and the flavor was great—especially the unagi roll.

We got lucky and went right before closing, so there was no wait. The waitress mentioned that if you’re coming with more than two people, it’s a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation.

Just moved to North Vancouver and tried some Japanese food until I found this place.
This place is certainly one of the top on my list. Have been here almost ten times within 2 months already.

The quality and authenticity of the dishes are phenomenal. I have reviewed many good Japanese restaurants and this place would be at the top of my list.

They also have Omakase where the chef chooses sushi for you, but I brought my wife here and decided to order what we like and we love it. The quality of the raw fishes and how the chef made the sushi was perfect.

Also tried 3 types of rolls, Futomaki, Special Roll, and Double Dragon roll. Love all of them.

Double dragon roll comes with Unagi (Japanese Eel) that was cooked so perfectly that it almost feels like it melts in my mouth. It was juicy and smelled just right.

There hot/cold dishes are also good. I tried TenZaru Soba, Chicken Karaage, and Yakisoba. Love them all (again).

I can confidently say this is the number one sushi restaurant in Vancouver.
This place always offers a sense of excitement with its selection of unique and seasonal fish you won’t easily find elsewhere. Every time I come here, I have to order the deluxe chirashi don — the sashimi is always incredibly fresh and pairs perfectly with the seasoned sushi rice.

Their spicy sashimi has a flavor that’s truly one of a kind — it’s honestly what keeps me coming back. The sushi and hot food menu is extensive, and I’ve never had a single dish that disappointed me. Everything I’ve tried has been a hit.

If you’re looking for authentic Japanese-style sushi, sashimi, and hot dishes, this is the place.
On top of all that, the staff are genuinely kind, professional, and attentive.
Highly recommend!

This place serves incredibly fresh sushi and the chefs clearly take pride in their craft, and the staff are attentive without being overbearing which made us feel right at home, also the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming. Definitely a spot I’ll keep coming back to. Highly recommended for anyone who loves true Japanese cuisine.

The best sushi in North America. It should be a crime to rate this place anything less than 5 stars. The freshest fish with a big diversity in selection, fish you won’t find anywhere else. And the people are wonderful.

This place is a hidden gem! The Deluxe Chirashi and the Unadon are the must try! Their service is also great and caring. This is exactly what we are looking for in a locally owned restaurant instead of franchises.

Wow! I was blown away with how delicious the sushi here was. My party enjoyed the deluxe chirashi sushi, double dragon rolls, and red tuna tataki roll. Each dish was crafted so beautifully and every bite was fresh and rich with a wonderfully combined flavour. I will definitely be returning and recommend this place to anyone in North Van area.

Excellent sushi. Come for very good sushi, traditional style. Staff are friendly. Ambiance is basic (small space), which is totally fine if you just want great food. Looked like a lot of locals and regulars were there when I visit. Apparently this place has been around for decades. I would highly recommend it. I personally had the deluxe chirashi and tried some of the premium sashimi like hamachi torro. Super fresh and good.
