Reviews
Starters:
The biryani balls were crisp on the outside and flavorful inside, while the tandoori wings were smoky, juicy, and perfectly spiced—an irresistible start to the meal.
Mains:
The lamb biryani was fragrant and rich, with tender meat and beautifully layered spices. The prawn curry was indulgent and full of depth, and the chicken tikka was succulent, charred just right, and packed with flavor.
Drinks:
A warm cup of chai complemented the spices perfectly, soothing and aromatic.
Dessert:
The rasmalai was soft, creamy, and delicately sweet—the perfect ending to a satisfying meal.
✨ Overall:
A beautifully balanced Indian dining experience with bold flavors, comforting classics, and a memorable finish. Highly recommended.
If you enjoy eating in shifts while your friends watch you with pity, Kawali House is the spot for you. Our meals arrived in “waves”… two of us ate while the third sat for 10 minutes contemplating their life choices.
The service logic here is truly visionary. We were told mains have no sides and we must order rice. So, we dropped R120 on two bowls of rice, only for the Biryani to arrive with enough grains to solve a national shortage and feed a family of six.
The highlights:
• The Meat: Drier than a Sunday afternoon in the Karoo.
• The Waiter: Disappeared into a witness protection program immediately after serving us.
• The Manager: Finally materialized when we called for him.
To his credit, the manager did try to fix the “balls up” by voiding the rice charges and offering free dessert. It was a nice gesture, but unless the dessert comes with a time machine to fix the service and a glass of water for that dry meat, I think I’ll pass on a second round.
The menu is more expensive than an average meal to dine out, but well worth it. Definitely will be returning.
Namaaz room and Wudu khana is also available on the property, a big plus.
Will definitely visit again!
From the moment we arrived, the service was shockingly poor. The staff were completely unorganized, rushing around aimlessly like they had no clue what was going on. Our waiter was extremely rude and unprofessional — she raised her voice at us, spoke back with attitude, and never once smiled or showed any effort to make us feel welcome. Despite asking multiple times to have the tables cleaned and rearranged for our large group, our requests were completely ignored. We were left tightly squeezed, uncomfortable, and frustrated throughout the evening.
The food? Overpriced and underwhelming. Portion sizes were embarrassingly small, especially considering we spent over R7,500. The quality did not match the cost in any way. The experience was made worse by the so-called “complimentary” nana upon arrival — they served just ONE nana for 15 people. Honestly, that felt more like an insult than a gesture. If that’s what you call complimentary, rather serve nothing at all.
There was no attention to detail — no palate cleansers after the starters, no follow-up from the waiter to check on the meal, no initiative to make the evening special. We’ve dined at many establishments both locally and internationally, and this was by far one of the worst in terms of service, atmosphere, and professionalism. The staff seemed poorly trained, disinterested, and completely detached from their roles.
We left the restaurant feeling disappointed, disrespected, and honestly quite upset. This wasn’t just an average bad experience — it was truly terrible. It felt like we were doing them a favour by being there, rather than being treated like valued customers.
We sincerely hope the owner and management team reads this review and takes it seriously. The standard of service we received is completely unacceptable — especially at this price point. A dining experience should never leave guests feeling this frustrated and let down.
We will not be returning, and we certainly won’t recommend this place to anyone. Absolutely terrible.
The Qawali was lovely, they played the best-hits. The servers were great and very helpful. I’d suggest going and trying for yourself but be wary of ordering according to the description. The main meals don’t come with sides as a standard so everything is additional.
Will definitely return again
