We both ordered the dragonfruit lemonade, which was incredible—perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and super refreshing. The starter cabbage salad was phenomenal and honestly had the best sesame dressing I’ve ever had. The clear veggie soup was also amazing, and the chef even came out to offer us a fresh cup from a new batch he had just made—such a thoughtful touch!
For meats, we chose the garlic shoyu skirt steak, short rib (kalbi), and shaved ribeye, and every single one was outstanding. Highly recommend all three.
Cooking our own food made the meal so fun and interactive, and everything about this place made for a truly memorable experience. Can’t wait to come back!
Walked in and stood awkwardly at the front, wondering if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait for a host. We waited about 5 minutes and asked a server if we should seat ourselves. Server responded (direct quote): “give us a few minutes, man…”
After another few minutes, someone from behind the bar greeted us and pointed to a booth, handing us menus so we could seat ourselves.
Server walked by us a few times before acknowledging us. When I asked for a drink recommendation, his response was, “we’re all right here in the present, right now…”
Huh??
No substitutions available on the menu for those with dietary restrictions (vegetarian, gluten free, etc.)
My wife’s meal came out before mine (I’m fine with that), but it was literally put on the table from a different server who didn’t say a word and then walked away. No acknowledgment of me or a “yours is finishing up and we’ll get it to you shortly” or anything of the sort.
Food was fine. Tasty, but not particularly noteworthy.
Our server did check in on us exactly once during the meal, asking how things were as he was walking by. To his credit, he did slow down ever so slightly while he walked by, but I wasn’t convinced he would have heard an answer if I did have something else I wanted.
When the bill came, it was a “pay at the table” machine, and he stood there waving his hand impatiently (the whole “give me my toy back” vibe).
A completely bizarre experience. I legit wonder if our server was high.
We were looking for a romantic dinner for date night, but at least we got a bonding experience instead that we will laugh about and never repeat again.
—-UPDATE—-
I have tried emailing the address provided by the owner in their reply several times and the inbox appears to be dead. Google tries resending over and over but the message never gets through. Tried to honor their request for more feedback but unfortunately their systems don’t seem set up for that at this time.
Unique to Sosogu are BBQ grills embedded at the bar, allowing diners to cook meats, mushrooms, and veggies to their liking. Sauce options include mayo-based, sweet soy sesame, and spicy ponzu.
For ramen lovers of hands‑on dining, or anyone looking for something a little different in Redlands, Sosogu is a culinary gem well worth a visit.
