Such a beautiful renovation to the restaurant! Great music and amazing customer service!!! Sadly the food itself was not anywhere close to Eritrean or Ethiopian food. Injera is made of Ted, corn and wheat but didn’t event taste close to injera. The dishes lacked flavor. Lastly the presentation of the food was lacking as seen here in the photo. I ordered Alecha, gomen, tum tum and shiro.

Food was bland, especially the okra. Service took a long time and made mistakes (we didn’t get any of the appetizers). We were accosted by a homeless person in the restaurant.

Every single person who breathes life into this restaurant infuse an abundance of love into every aspect. Every bite is packed with love, history, culture. You are made to feel that you’re being welcomed into the family’s home to enjoy a meal with your most precious friends and family members. I’ve NEVER experienced something so moving.

So I have been to Dahlak several times and I can honestly say that  not only have I never had a bad experience but each visit seemed to bring something new to a comfortable welcoming environment. My first time ever going to Dahlak I did so on a whim, I happened to be in the area and wanted to try something new and different.
Unassuming  from the exterior dahlek   provides a welcome departure  from the urban sprawl of city life. Upon entering the restaurant the interior decor is simple not over worked, but extremely effective at providing  a warm welcoming feel that transports you out of city life and into an eclectic safe space of diversity and inclusion centered around food, friends and music. To the general public the menu may seem a bit confusing but the staff is very friendly knowledgeable eager to explain and even happy to provide insights or suggestions. With three distinct areas each with its own atmosphere, Dahlak offers something for everyone. The main dining/hookah area is quiet enough to easily carry a conversation round a table. For those seeking a little fuller experience the second dinning area has a bar and a performance area that regularly features fresh local music artists. While the thi
rd area has the feel of your local corner bar complete with large screen TVs usually showing sports and a music choice jukebox.
The appeal of Dahlak is not just the food music or decor but also the patrons and atmosphere that has been nurtured and developed over Dahlak’s 35+ year existence which embraces diversity and multiculturalism at its core. I highly recommend a visit to Dahlak to anyone and everyone, whether you are looking for good food, a new experience or even a place to call your second home. Prices are reasonable, food is excellent and atmosphere makes it a can’t miss.

I liked this restaurant, food was good, waitress was very friendly, welcoming and courteous. Plus point of this restaurant is the ethinicity and diversion as in terms of offering different culture food.
Well, they could use a thorough renovation and a simple planning to redecorate what they already have.

Loving the new look with the mesob tables. I was expecting the authentic Ethiopian dining experience where they bring out a big round plate for the mesob and we all eat off of it, but we were given a small square plate to serve one. Food was great though. And the date cake is delicious. Do try it.

I wish they could import Tej. I fell in love with honey wine at an Ethiopian restaurant in Queens and haven’t had any since.

The food was absolutely delicious. Packed with so much flavor. I am definitely coming back. I had the lentils, okra, and spicy beef and all three were amazing. The injira bread was spectacular. We came on a Friday night and there was karaoke and we all did a song. Overall a blast!

Heartbroken that my favorite restaurant for the past 20 years has taken such a bad turn. We had several VERY bad takeout experiences during COVID but chalked it up to the changes caused by the pandemic. We recently went there to dine in – thrilled to be back at our beloved spot. We waited an hour and a half for our food without anyone getting us drinks or checking on us (it was not crowded). When the food finally came, we were totally shocked. We received one small dish (not the typical, large communal dish – more like an individually sized plate, with VERY, VERY, VERY tiny servings of each of our orders and no sides (the typical Dahlak meal came with one side and some salad). SEE THE PICTURE – That was supposed to be FOUR complete entrees, costing nearly $60 (!!!). Again, we’ve eaten at Dahlak for decades and I’ve eaten Ethiopian food all over the country and the world – this serving size was far, far, far from what is normal or acceptable. In the past, it was typical for Dahlak to serve a single meal on one piece of injera – the main course, the side, and the salad – all very hearty portions. Now, they are serving four entrees on one piece of injera with no sides and no salad. We were speechless. We literally each ate our complete “meal” in three bites. We tried to ask the staff what was going on but we did not see anyone aside from when we were first seated. When I finally tracked someone down they were very dismissive and rude (not the usual Eritrean staff that had been there for decades). It seems that they’ve shifted from being a restaurant to being much more of a bar and hooka spot. Over the years I brought almost every friend and family member to this restaurant and hosted several very large work dinners here – I can’t imagine doing any of that ever again. The hipsters drinking and smoking outside seemed quite content, but I’m so sad that the place that was such a special part of our lives is gone. After the terrible takeout experiences and this most recent visit we did try to speak with management but it went nowhere, alas…
