I’ve been aware of Little Kyoto for quite a while now but have only recently had the opportunity to enjoy their food, and enjoy it I did, as did the rest of my family. The wait for takeout on Friday was onerous, but worth it for me, as I sent my daughter. She had a different opinion but she can write her own review, I was very happy.

From the outside it just looks like someone’s house. ‍♀️ who knows maybe it is? But the 5 rolls and tempura vegetables my husband and I had were AMAZING! Probably THE BEST we have ever had! We had The Star,(our favorite!) You could taste every layer of the roll I swear! We had the Butterfly, the Tiger and the Dynamite. (I believe that was it’s name.) Their hours are weird, Weekdays: 11:30-1 and then again 5-7.
No weekends.
They no longer serve beer or wine.

Desperate for some grub, my husband and I headed into Hayden to find some sustenance. We decided to try out Little Kyoto. As you drive up you won’t find what you’re looking for, unless you’re looking for a cute house with a Little Kyoto sign off to the side.

While the outside looks residential, once you walk in, you find yourself in a cozy dining area with smooth elevator music playing in the background. (Which was nice, because our food took a minute to get to us) We were on the hunt for sushi, so we ordered the Spicy Salmon, the Tornado Roll, and the Spider Roll.

The restaurant is a mom and pop shop, which lends to a warm dining experience, but also lends itself to longer wait times for food. Our waiter was very kind and kept us topped off with water throughout the night. When our food arrived, it was decent. The fresh fish in the salmon roll was wonderful, but the tornado roll was a little cream cheese heavy. My husband and I both agreed that the flavor of the Tornado Roll was there, but it was hidden under a thick layer of dairy.

In all, a super cozy spot to munch some seafood. The sushi was good, but not amazing, and the wait time had us on our phones after the first 30 min. Expect a nice visit, just not a quick one!

Little Kyoto is a little yellow house with parking on the left (north) side. I’ve been hunting for a good sushi place in the inland PNW. (Sushi-I was terrible and Fu-ki was passable), but now my hunt is over. Little Kyoto is by far the best we’ve found in the inland PNW. The ingredients were fresh and each ingredient had the proper taste and texture and look. We also sampled their bulgogi and green curry, which were pretty good, but the Rainbow Roll was excellent 9/10. Don’t let the casual atmosphere fool you, the sushi chef in this mom and pop shop is a master at his craft. They also do takeout.

Little Kyoto holds the key to what sushi is all about. Granted, I’ve never been to Japan, so most of this review is coming from a stupid American mind. Little Kyoto has THE best sushi in North Idaho by far. The variety is amazing and the service is efficient. The only thing that is a downside to this place is the inconsistent schedule that they are actually open. If you happen to score a lucky night that they are open, be prepared to wait for a table before you eat.

Delightful, artistically rolled sushi and a quaint little restaurant. As it’s a small restaurant with only 5 tables, its best for small groups (2-4) and not for those in a hurry. Each roll is beautifully done by the owner, who clearly has MANY decades of experience, assisted by his wife. The server is great, just one person serving though so again just a very low key spot with AMAZING food.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the area.

I am Japanese and miss real Japanese foods here in North Idaho.
Little Kyoto makes me smile like I’m home! The family is really nice and great people.
Lunch bento box is great deal
Curry is good portion, teriyaki chicken is juicy, sushi is the best around here (including Spokane) because other Japanese restaurants don’t know how to make real sushi rice but Little Kyoto does perfect job every time!
Rice is the important for Sushi and they understand it very well.
