I came from Europe and stopped by this Ethiopian restaurant in the heart of Silver Spring. The food was very good and tasted authentic, just like back home in Ethiopia.
The atmosphere is warm and really gives you the feeling of being back home.
The staff and the owner were respectful and kind, which I really appreciated.
I definitely recommend this place if you want good Ethiopian food.

The food here is absolutely amazing, and the restaurant itself is wonderful. I’ve been a customer for quite a long time, and the quality of the food has always been excellent.
However, I often face issues with the service. The servers are frequently hard to get attention from, and at times it feels like some are not very willing to serve customers, which is not good for such a great restaurant.
I do want to specifically mention the waitress listed on my receipt as Hanna 2 — she provided outstanding service and was clearly the one serving almost everybody. She was attentive, professional, and made a big difference in our experience.
If the owners read this, I kindly suggest improving overall service standards and supporting the waitstaff to match the quality of the food. With better consistency in service, this place would be close to perfect.
Other than the service issues mentioned, the food is excellent and this is truly an amazing restaurant.

This place is money. An absolute W of a restaurant and bar. The live music is incredibly entertaining as well as interactive. The crowd and atmosphere are so welcoming. The food is so fresh and made with love. The hospitality is intoxicating. Talk about an amazing experience and one hell of a Saturday night.

This restaurant has a completely different ambiance than the other Ethiopian restaurants in downtown Silver Spring. Its very dark with a lot of TVs and a prominent bar. There are a lot of waitresses and the service is good. The meat dishes are very good. Its the best Ethiopian restaurant in the area to drink beer, eat meat dishes, and watch the game. I wouldn’t come here expecting a family environment though.

Shalla is second to none when it comes to the quality, taste and portion of meats esp geba weta is my most favorite though sometimes the taste is not that good and I guess it depends on the chef. But, the restaurant gotta ensure that the it should be smelling good and clean which is not the case.

I came here with my son after reading Tom Sietsema’s good review in the WaPo. We came around 7 on a Thursday, and it was not crowded. The air was thick with incense. We ended up having the most flavorful and delicious Ethiopian meal I’ve ever had. We got the veggie combo and the Misto combo of beef key and alicha wot. Everything was incredibly tasty. I’m sad to see so many bad reviews – I hope they can even out the food/service because my experience was amazing.

We ordered Gomen Besiga and Shint Tibs. The Gomen Besiga was very poor and didn’t have the proper meat and bone. Also, the “Shint Tibs” was not actually made from ሽንጥ.
If this wasn’t available, you should have informed us so we could choose something else from the menu. This was very disappointing service, especially for an Ethiopian business. Please take this feedback seriously and improve your standards, rather than accepting mediocrity.

Shall restaurant has an excellent food selection, from raw meat to Tibs, and great entertainment. However, the smell of urine, and I don’t know what it is from the restroom, makes it difficult to eat. It feels like you are being served food while sitting in a restroom.
