In 2003 Back Alley Bakery served fresh sourdough in the alley of 609 W 2nd Street. In 2009 we were able to acquire the front portion of the building and we grew. Since 2009 we have been serving up desserts, full breakfast and lunches. We are so much more than a bakery!

The service here is consistently warm and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. I will say, as a brown woman, I often find myself the only person of color in the space, and the stares from some patrons can feel uncomfortable. It’s not a reflection on the staff, who are lovely but it’s worth noting for others who value inclusive vibes.
Now, onto the food: it’s a little on the pricey side for what’s offered, but the quality makes it worth it. I’ve tried the turkey bacon ranch wrap and the flaming chicken sandwich both were solid, but I highly recommend the wrap, especially paired with their fresh side salad.
Dessert is where this place truly shines. I’ve had the chocolate turtle cheesecake, the pecan cheesecake, and a cherry chocolate cupcake. The cheesecakes? Hands down the best I’ve ever had rich, balanced, and unforgettable. The cupcake was a bit too sweet for my taste, but it had a satisfying heft that made it feel indulgent.
If you’re going to try anything, make it the cheesecake and the wrap. I’ll definitely be coming back.

I would give 4 1/2 stars overall if I could. The atmosphere is awesome, the baked goods look delicious, and service was very friendly! I had ordered the cranberry chicken salad sandwich while husband had a jerk chicken sandwich. Mine was extremely small compared to his and not very filling, while at the same price. That’s really my only complaint. We will still be going back for more!

This is a really nice place for those who don’t eat exclusively plant-based. The look is nice. The staff is always nice, too. The menu prices are now what you pay with a credit card. There’s a cash discount. It was a pleasant surprise to see plant-based sausage. That’s about it for vegans though. I also understand that it’s also about the clientele which doesn’t request vegan options.

The food is really good but their order accuracy was off.

I absolutely LOVE the lunch menu here! Service is great, and food is wonderful. They change the menu every day, which keeps things different.

Fun atmosphere! Good food! Attentive service. I would highly recommend grabbing a loaf or two of bread to go! The cinnamon rolls were outstanding! I wish every town supported small businesses the way that this city does!

A must-stop if you’re in Downtown Hastings for breakfast or lunch. It’s the best atmosphere and the freshest food. You can’t go wrong with any of their sandwiches and the potato chips with ranch always hit the spot. Locally-owned and we love it!
