Back then, the Roake family had lots of mouths to feed and not much money to spend, but at the hot dog stand, they ate like kings. He would delight in all the …

I took my time before posting this.
I have been here 5 times in the last 2 months. All 5 times have been great experiences.
I had tried to come here several years ago and left having not ordered anything after the former management/owners were pretty unfriendly.
These folks who are running the place now are awesome. They’re prompt, courteous, friendly, and they remember you when you come back.
Each time I have returned the place has been busier. The word is getting out, and I am not surprised.
If you like classic drive in lunch food, this place is not disappointing! The hot dogs, sausage, burgers, and milkshakes are all great! The only thing I haven’t tried is the chili dogs as I can’t have paprika.
My only complaint is that they close at 4pm. Awesome job turning this place around and making it an awesome spot. I look forward to many more visits over the coming months.

Was these the best hot dogs around? No but they were good! You can’t beat the prices and that makes it so much more worth it!!! The sauce isnt the strongest so get extra! The chili burger was just okay. I don’t think I would call it a chili burger. You will understand when you order one. So confused on how to eat that thing lol but this place is definitely worth trying and if you don’t like it good news it’s cheap!

Have been to the McGloughlin store a while ago, but this location is amazing. It’s a full dine in with beers on tap too!
Most of the food orders are gut busters but they’re tasty. Total comfort food.
The staff was pleasant and friendly.
Only draw back is that it’s cash only.
Going back soon to get that monster burger

Every once in a while I have a craving for a Coney Island dog and Roake’s is the spot! 11” dog and a huge basket of fresh cut fries for $10 c’mon! So tasty! Classic 50’s diner vibe but very clean and well kept! Highly recommend if you haven’t been!

I’ve only been here three times in the 22 years I’ve lived in Portland. They used to only take cash.. which I never had on me…had today off from work and recalled they take credit cards…excellent service and high quality…try it out!!

We had an outstanding lunch of sausage coney dogs done just right and really good fries that you could tell were recently actually a potato. Malted milkshake was good too, but the star of the meal was the person on the phone that took our detailed and uninformed carryout order. The price actually didn’t make us feel guilty about making the stop, either. Crew at pickup was attentive and kind to the cuatomers. What a rarity!! Nice!

Valynn and Doug! I havent been to Roakes in over 10 years. I previously went to the one on McLoughlin and didn’t even know this one on Lombard existed until today (1/7/26). And what a wonderful experience! Valynn was extremely kind in taking our order (even placing it on hold while I ran home to get the card I forgot). And Doug was just the sweetest! Even though our order was to go, he came and checked on us and made fun small talk. You don’t really get to experience that anymore, so it was an absolute pleasure talking to to them.
If you’re in the market for good food and good people, head to Roake’s!

Ok, this place exceeded expectations! I expected nostalgia and a great local vibe, but I got really great fries, a great dog, excellent corndog, and friendly service. They now accept credit cards.
This place is legit old school, not retro!

Roake’s is special. Not too many eateries have been around since 1937. There’s a reason why and it’s because they stick to what they do well and give people what they want. When I write about hot dogs, often times people will mention Roake’s. My favorite hot dog in the area is Zach’s Shack but Roake’s is its own thing much like In-N-Out is in its own lane when it comes to burgers. The joint has a cool 1950’s vibe with vinyl booths and doo-wop music. I ordered the long sausage. with mustard, onion and Coney Roake’s sauce. It looks like mess in the photo but it was tasty. It wasn’t like what I expect from a sausage. My daughter went with their regular dog. I’ll probably just go with that next time. We also ordered some fries and a bowl of chili. It was nice for dipping the fries. I learned they have two locations and that this one began in the 90’s. I want to go to the original 1930’s location and try their cheeseburgers. NOTE: Its cash only. Bring pictures of dead Presidents. Check out my profile for more great eateries and craft cocktail bars. ✌
