Aqua Penny’s opened up a little over a year ago and the restaurant screams trendy, fun, and flavors to awaken the senses.
The drink menu is hand crafted by the amazing mixologists who really know how to create a cocktail to smell and savor every sip. The Jade Temptation is a green, little herby, bright, with a little sweetness cocktail that almost says I am on vacation somewhere.
The appetizer of shrimp larb lettuce wraps (2) with a few crisps for crunch as a light starter is the start of a beautifully crafted meal.
The 2nd course of a hearty, yet rich seafood gumbo which the pairing starts to make sense when I think foods of Thailand like rice and shrimp, but leaning into southern cooking.
Chef Penny knows how the masterclass of flavors like the main course of crispy duck with red curry and jasmine rice. The level of flavor start with spicy and the sweetness of charred pineapple, but to take another bite with the licorice notes of Thai basil and roasted cashews. The red curry sauce is luscious, complex, and plays well with the blistered tomatoes and sautéed peppers. The duck is cooked beautifully with a crispy skin that adds to the experience of tastes and textures.
Lastly was a puff pastry filled with Thai custard with a little brulee of sugar. The dessert was a nice finish, but not a favorite as the flavor fell flat. The choices for dessert were this, a chocolate mousse, or strawberry short cake and I wanted to stay with a theme of Thai influence. Regardless of my thoughts of dessert, I would MOST CERTAINLY come back to Aqua Penny’s.
Our server, Taylor made recommendations on my oyster selections and they were on par! She was very engaged despite having multiple tables. Our glasses were never empty and she seemed to be a lifelong pro. We came to find, she was NEW! I would’ve never known. This young lady was well versed in the menu and never faltered on any questions we asked which made us very comfortable taking any tips she had!
I ordered a dozen assorted oysters and Taylor said the Island Creeks were huge. She wasn’t lying. Best oysters I’ve had since moving to the Midwest.
My husband got the drunken noodles and was in heaven the whole time. The seafood was all so fresh and incredible. With so much seafood in addition to the noodles I expected the dish to be overly salty, but instead the whole dish was refreshing and sensational.
We have celebrated here for one of our anniversary’s two years ago and now this will be a staple of ours more often simply based on our service with Taylor as well as our overall experience.
