Online order is wrong every time I order from here. Order is never ready when it should be. Food is good, but $34 for two salads is just not worth it.

Update March 10th – yet another bad experience at this location. Order wasn’t even started 10 minutes after expected pickup time and the restaurant was completely empty. The order was wrong yet again. Missing items, brown lettuce, soupy beans, and a hair underneath the tortilla only discovered once I was almost finished. Disgusting. Will not return.

This is definitely one of the better locations. The food is great, the decor is nice, and there is plenty of seating. The only issues: the music is played too loudly, and the service is slow.
*There is an outdoor patio and the prices are reasonable for the portion sizes.

This Cafe Rio is disgusting. They have food all over the counter and prep area. Directly above the grill and ingredients that go into your meal are two air vents that don’t look like they have ever been cleaned. I don’t see how these couldn’t be dropping debris into the food. This has to be some sort of Health Department or food safety violation. Absolutely would never recommend this location. I noticed all this as I waited in line for over 15 minutes without being acknowledged by a single employee. I ended up walking out and being glad I did. This Cafe Rio clearly does not care about the food or the customer.

Save yourself the hassle and drive to a different location. Most of the workers seemed like we were bothering them, not friendly at all. Three times while we were ordering the lady working would just walk away, towards the back without saying anything. The tortillas were hard and not fresh tasting like every other time (at other locations). We ordered chips and queso and the cheese was spoiled for sure. The color and taste was off. The chicken and Barbacoa did not have any flavor. Another customer went to ask about the horchata because the dispenser was empty. Two of the not so friendly employees just stood there. One went to fill it and mixed the drink mix at one of the tables (spilling and leaving the whisk on the table and the top off the horchata). He seemed like he was the hardest worker of the bunch, staying busy the whole time. The food area where the meats were was messy. I honestly am hoping we don’t get sick after eating here. We wanted to try out the new location, but from now on we will be returning to the location by the Chandler mall.

I have always loved Cafe Rio. I have visited them out of state and lived near the one in Ahwatukee. This one is every bit as great as the others. The food is fresh and flavorful. My favorite is the salad with shredded chicken and tomatillo ranch. It is like a party in my mouth. The staff is friendly and fast. The drive through is a nice addition. I will be a regular here.

Last night I visited this Cafe Rio location with my partner, going through the Drive Thru and ordered my food with no issues. It was made perfectly and delicious. The guy working there was very nice and even gave us a free drink even though I didn’t order one.

Once I got home and opened my bag, I discovered that the young man who helped us had written a very kind note on the lid. I have had a horrible last two weeks and it’s wrecked havoc on my mental health, and yesterday had been one of the worst. Seeing this little note honestly made my day and deeply touched me. That gentleman didn’t have any idea what is going on with me, so I appreciate his random act of kindness. I never expected something like this from a Cafe Rio and I don’t know his name, but I hope Cafe Rio knows what a valuable employee they have and hopefully he gets some much earned recognition.

I’ve been here a couple of times and they’ve always been nice but this last time the SERVICE was just so ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I made a mistake and ordered online at a different location, showed up here and I believe it was the manager, helped me realize my mistake and as I was dreading driving from Chandler to phx, he asked what I ordered and said they’d make it for me. I just want to say my order was not easy, it was two salads with a lot of on the side items and not once did they complain about it though at this point I didn’t really care if they just threw everything together and told them that but they still did it. I hate feeling like a bother so this had my anxiety at an all time high and I think he could tell so to alleviate it with a little comedy, he read my order out loud and we were able to laugh about it. This has got to be one of the best experiences I’ve had at any eatery -something you expect from a mom and pops. You’d almost forget this is part of a big franchise. I’m so sorry I didn’t get your names but thank you so much for your kindness. You all were so amazing. I live in mesa but would make the extra drive to give them business. You should too!!!!!

Very unimpressed. We’ve been to other Cafe Rios around the valley, and they were great so we were really excited to try the new one near us. Big disappointment. I really don’t think the employees cared about their work at all. The kid making the burrito just sloped stuff in the tortilla. Then when he tried to wrap it the tortilla split on one end and the other end looked more like an open enchilada. It was a mess. Then he proceeded to throw lettuce along with the water it was sitting in on top. Now a soggy mess. Then after I paid, the cashier just walked away to talk with another employee, while I had to reach over the counter to take the bag off the rack. We’ll give them one more try, but there are too many great restaurants around to keep spending money at one with employees who take no pride in their work. Sad thing is, I was the only one in there.

This was our first time visiting this restaurant. We used the drive-thru and ordered a burrito to share. We picked the Sweet Pork Barbacoa, since that seems to be their signature item. We asked for the rice and pinto beans with mild sauce inside. They were out of the mild sauce, so we asked for the medium on the side, instead.

The employee taking the order was polite and patient since this was our first time ordering. We didn’t know that enchilada-style was included in the price or we probably would have ordered it like that. Most places charge extra for enchilada style.

We drove to the window to pay and our order was done really quickly.

When we got home and removed the container from the bag, the presentation of the food looked nice with the burrito and a lettuce garnish on the side. When we took the burrito out of the container to split and the bottom of the burrito was completely soggy with juice from the pico de gallo that was on the lettuce garnish. It might have been better if there was a partition in the container to keep the wet lettuce and tomatoes away from the burrito.

As far as the taste of the burrito, I would have to call it average. We don’t live far from the restaurant, maybe 5 minutes, and the burrito was barely warm when we got home. Maybe if we would have gotten it enchilada style it would have been warmer with sauce and cheese melted on top and we wouldn’t have noticed the wet tortilla on the bottom as much. My son liked the sweet pork and I thought it was too sweet.

We will try it again, though. Maybe next time we will dine inside so we can see the food options better and ask more questions about the best way to order.

They also have a rewards program called Rio Rewards where you get points and special offers when you sign up. You can also order online from their website and pick it up at the restaurant.

Let me preface by saying I go to cafe rio very often and love this place. This location however is a different story.

I went when they first opened, the food quality was so-so and they were out of half their items. But it’s a new place and super busy and new staff so it was what it was.

Fast forward 8-ish months I believe. They’ve been pushing deals tons of deals in the app at this location only for a while now. I finally decided to take the long drive across town to take advantage of a BOGO deal, why not.

I get there right around 6:30pm, decent line but nothing crazy. Get to my order, 2 salads. First red flag, only 1 tortilla left but the kid serving found another tortilla under the bag. He attempted to bring this dry falling apart hunk back to life, I honestly felt bad for him cause he was doing his best and clearly it’d been a long day. I had him throw in a bunch of small tortillas instead, no biggie.

Next red flag, no rice. OK whatever. Now the kid proceeds to scoop the beans… no beans, all juice. Uh oh. Plenty of meat so that’s nice. And then throws a hung of cheese on top and runs it through the cooker. (Never seen this order for a salad at any other location but whatever)

Now here’s the real issue, the vegetable station… here’s a list of things they have:

-Pico (about 2 scoops left)
– Ranch

That’s it. Seriously. 3 hours before closing and there is nothing left. No heads up before I got here. Just a sorry, we’re out of EVERYTHING. So I’m left with a sad tortilla bean juice cheese meat soup bowl x 2.

I honestly should have declined the food and left but I just worked 14 hours, I’m exhausted and hungry so I paid but now I’m eating cereal and going to bed annoyed I just drove 45 minutes round trip for something that’s going in the trash because the pico tasted like it had been out for hours.

I love Cafe Rio but clearly this locations ownership does not care at all about this place or the people in it. It was awful.
