If you’re traveling through Hugoton, Kansas, looking for somewhere to eat, I would give this place a try. Our experience was mixed, but I would go there again. One problem was the service. We stopped late afternoon when there was only one other table occupied. The service started out fine, but as the place filled up we were ignored. Another problem was what I ordered, the salad topped with tilapia. The salad itself was large and very good–lettuce, tomato, black beans, corn, tortilla strips with a delicious dressing–and they had several variations on it topped with shrimp, chicken, tilapia, etc. I like fish so I chose the tilapia but it was not good: it had a slight odor to it, which to me means it wasn’t fresh. I wished I had chosen the shrimp. Now you coasties will say, “Why would you order fish in Kansas?” But tilapia is usually a safe choice here, being farm raised and fresh frozen. I usually have good luck ordering it, but not this time.

The food was good, however the desserts were not. Soup was blazing hot, tasted very good and plenty of it. The chips and salsa as well as the guacamole were good. Unfortunately the apple dessert was still frozen inside and tasted bad to boot. I’ll eat lunch or dinner here again when I come through but I think I’ll skip dessert. It looked nice but tasted bad, bummer.

After I spoke to waitress about my food she did not come check on me once. I waited forever to get my ticket. Mexican pizza was soggy and chicken was spicy.

Very disappointing experience. I’m only giving 2 stars because the atmosphere of the place was great, and the presentation of food was on point. But, the food was bland, bland, bland. I had a black bean and mushroom burrito. It had no flavor whatsoever. No comino, no garlic, no cilantro, and absolutely no picante. And the mushrooms were from a can. The chips were pretty good, but the salsa was more like Campbell’s tomato soup.

Nice small town Mexican restaurant. Staff friendly and responsive. Food was good, but seemed a little bland. The rice was good, enchiladas were good but the beans were lacking in flavor. Chips and salsa were good, would call it a mild salsa. Atmosphere was good, a little worn but works fine for the small town community restaurant. Seems everyone inside knows everyone.

So happy to have discovered this place nine years ago. Wears through periodically on a 500 mile drive we make several times a year and look forward to coming here for an excellent meal Love love love Los Agaves!

Chicken was spicy…told the waitress and she didn’t believe me. It was also super salty. Maybe it marinated to long or was cooked with something spicy. Told her I didn’t want it, ordered a taco pizza, it was kinda bland and soggy. Way different than the last time I came. Won’t be back anytime soon.
