They offer a nice variety of breakfast options. We ordered bagel sandwiches and home fries. The food was good but nothing I would go out of my way for.
Our server was pleasant, but did not explain to us that we were supposed to bring the check up front to pay. We had to ask another sever about it.
It is what it is, and it’s still home.
That being said… I feel like the 1 star reviews for Hazel’s are maybe way too harsh and not factoring in the inevitable stated above, but rather just a bunch of obnoxious complainers with unrealistic expectations.
The neighborhood does the best it can with what it’s got. Hazel’s does that and quite sufficiently, in my opinion, and today I had a perfectly fine breakfast with great service. Even the coffee was nice.
I’m a fairly recent transplant who has lived in over a dozen cities across the states . I’m very health conscious, I’m a home/hobby chef, I had to give up the ol’ gluten thanks to getting old & having an uncooperative body- and now I live in New Castle, PA. Do I miss easy, nearby access to 24 hr diners, restaurants with GF & organic options, salad spots, health food stores, a wider variety of ethnic restaurants, and expertly drawn espresso drinks in cozy cafes with sofas and books? YEP. All the time.
But- life goes on, and I love sitting down on a weekday morning to a good diner style breakfast and a good book. I also love hole in the wall, mom & pop type spots. So I tried Hazel’s and Hazel’s IS that nice little hole in the wall for a solid breakfast!
It doesn’t “stink” like one patron claimed, and I’m very sensitive to smoke and mold. I had no issue with smelling either, so I’m glad I ignored that reviewer’s comments.
My waitress was also very nice and super attentive. Perhaps “rude” waitstaff is often a reflection of rude patrons? Just food for thought, folks. ♀️ (They’re people just like anyone else, not servants obligated to absorb other people’s bad moods like emotional punching bags.)
If you can’t appreciate the blue collar, Steel Belt charm of a no frills, timeworn local restaurant… don’t go to Hazel’s…or to New Castle, lol. Just go be a snob somewhere else. But if you want to be amongst real people and soak up the experience of a working class neighborhood breaking bread together- come try it out!
As for the food… give an old girl some grace, will ya? It won’t kill you, I promise. It may take a meal or two to dial in how you want it cooked but it’ll get there. “Extra-EXTRA crispy” might just be “slightly crispy” to them, and so you’ll get to experiment and learn the right code for how you actually like your food depending on who’s in the kitchen- and that’s the beauty of a local spot. It’s not hard to learn how to customize your preferences and it’s not the end of the world to eat a meal or two you didn’t love on an off day during that learning curve- it’s still a meal…which means you’re fortunate enough to be fed and far luckier than way too many souls out there, so get over yourselves and find a way to be grateful even when there was room for some culinary improvement.
And maybe don’t expect Michelin star gormet food from a local diner, lol. ♀️
A little trial and error never killed anyone- and a little grace & patience is always a way to make everyone’s day brighter- even your own. Maybe strike up a convo with a nearby table? Or learn the name of your waitress/waiter and enjoy knowing it?
Embrace the humanity of the imperfect world we live in and just surf those little bumps in the road with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. You might be surprised by what it brings you.
It could be a really wonderful meal and time shared with good people at Hazel’s! ✨️
