Came here a few times when the hype was at its peak. The Boston location got a lot of attention after their New York branch made the Michelin Guide, so I was curious to see what the fuss was about. I haven’t tried the NY one yet, but honestly, the food here felt a bit mild. Clean, but also a little soulless.
To be fair, Northern Chinese cuisine is naturally subtler than the Szechuan-heavy menus most people in Boston are used to. They also seem to rely entirely on natural ingredients, skipping flavor enhancers like MSG. That’s admirable, but compared to the best Northern spots I’ve had elsewhere, the flavors here (especially in the broth and noodles) just didn’t linger. One thing I did appreciate was that every table had a full bottle of chili oil, so you can freely doctor your noodles or dumplings to your liking.
The pan-fried pork dumplings also could’ve used a crispier crust. They tasted more “seared” than fried. And the Peking duck buns was a tad too sweet, missing that savory depth that I usually like about this dish.
Not a bad spot by any means, but probably not one I’d return to. If I’m craving Northern Chinese again, I’ll stick with my usual spot in Central Square.
However, the food was honestly very average and below expectations. The roasted duck noodles were not good at all. The duck was not marinated enough and it was not roasted. The skin was very sloppy and not crispy.
Overall, the atmosphere is the strong point, but the food quality was disappointing.
The dumplings are a must-try — juicy and perfectly cooked. Their dishes and the portions are generous for the price. You can really tell they use quality ingredients.
The staff is friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is clean and comfortable. Whether you’re dining in or ordering takeout, the food is consistently delicious.
Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the Brookline area. Highly recommend!
The place is simple clean minimum decorated. We we were there at lunchtime. The restaurant was almost full.
Service: no wait for 2 people. Servers were nice and food came out within reasonable time.
Vibes: I really like the modern design. The tables were also well spaced out, and it never felt noisy.

The pork xiaolongbao definitely lived up to its raving reviews, with the broth being very juicy, flavorful, and paired with just the right amount of skin dough to meat filling. The steamed shrimp and pork dumplings were also packed with fillings and very well-seasoned. Also, huge kudos to that chili oil, perfect amount of spice and crispiness.
We weren’t very impressed with the pan-fried pork dumplings as they weren’t really crispy, but the taste is really good. The pan-fried Peking duck buns were a bit underwhelming as well as it just tasted like any other duck-filled buns. But then again, the buns themselves were really well made, it was soft and lightly crispy.
The taro puff was probably the biggest letdown due to its misrepresentation in the menu (purple on the outside), and that it was neither crispy or fluffy. The taste was okay.
Price: definitely a bit higher than I would expect for staple dishes like dumplings, but it won’t break your bank, and I felt 70% full after.
Overall it was a worthwhile experience, especially to end the year with 🙂 I would definitely want to come back to try the hand-pulled noodles and other dishes in the future.
