The food and staff are excellent! Definitely a hidden gem in the La Mesa area. This may be my go to spot for a quick Mexican takeout. don’t forget about the fish tacos.

This is maybe the best Mexican food in La Mesa/ east county. I live really close by and have never had a bad experience here. It’s convenient and fast and the food is extremely high quality for the price. The chefs in that kitchen work so hard, and so does the front counter staff. They’re always pleasant on the phone when I call. I absolutely love this place and have made it a weekly treat for myself and my husband. It’s my go-to for when I can’t decide what to eat and it never fails to satisfy. I would give more stars if I could. Love love love <3

Used to be better. Prices on the menu don’t reflect actual price at the register. Some items they try to charge you more. Really Bug Burro used to come with cheese and now it doesn’t.

Got the California Burrito with carnitas instead of carne asada. I was in heaven for 30 mins while eating this. Ate the whole thing and it was the size of my head, I couldn’t stop, it was so so good. The woman working at the counter was super nice too, I got a horchata, but she also gave me a free taste of the Jamaica because I told her I’ve never tried it before.

Both the Horchata and Jamaica are authentic & delicious, not from a soda machine.

They had season 3 SpongeBob playing while I waited for my food

California Carnitas Burrito & medium Horchata = $20. Pricey, but worth it to me since the burrito was massive & everything was to die for.

I love this place, will be back!

So bummed! After many great experiences here previously, tonight there was a hair in my burrito. I am heartbroken as I have loved eating here over the years, ever since they opened. The food is great but I can’t get past this one…

One of my favorite California burritos in all of San Diego. Perfect flavor and balance of ingredients every time!

(I’ve been eating burritos for 20+ years and this one is one of the best I’ve had!)

Bean rice and cheese is fire
The birria burrito also
But taco Tuesday sucks. Such tiny amounts for $2.50 each the fish must have swam away only chewy batter the size of my pinky. Will I go again…for the good things I mentioned

The best taco shop in La Mesa, they tacos are great, especially the fish, they use very good tortillas. The Señor Burro burrito is one of my regular orders. Good portions for the price and always good. Great service.

This place is good, clean and has a huge unique menu with good prices on most items, I will never pay $10 for a burrito though… Some staff are friendlier than others (I just think most of them are shy )… But I have to leave a balanced review.. so here it is… I’ve added some photos as well.

I’ve eaten here a lot throughout the past month. Over a two week time frame I decided to order the same thing for one week during breakfast hours. And then again on a whole other week during late lunch – early dinner hours.

For breakfast I got a basic breakfast burrito, eggs, beans and fries. Not one of their signature menu burritos with sour cream. (Sour cream is in almost everything here ) more on that burrito later. Upon ordering it I usually have to repeat myself “Eggs, Fries and beans” several times until it gets entered into the computer. It’s made well everytime Usually it takes less than 10 minutes to get my order. Which, I think is good. I give the burrito a 7/10 adding Pico I will give it 8 /10. If they used potatoes instead of fries it would be a 9/10

For lunch – early dinner I got the Adobada Street Tacos no guac. Pretty basic, nothing crazy.. Takes almost 20 minutes to get my food, consistently.

I’m taking into consideration of how busy the shop at this time. This place is way less busy than other taco shops I’ve gone to in my 30 years of going to taco shops. So I don’t think the street tacos should be taking almost 20 minutes. Overall I give the street tacos, a 7 out of 10, sometimes they are dry.

Now let’s talk about portion size .. I look for consistency and quality. When I get a breakfast burrito with beans, the majority of the burrito becomes a mostly beans and fries with very little egg burrito. If I get it without beans, there’s a nice balance between eggs and fries. But if I get the Jessie Buritto without sour cream which is kinda same thing only with ham, I get a soft soupy mess of a burrito, the eggs are super runny and the beans are all over the place with what looks like butter oozing out.

As for the quality on the Adobada tacos… I have gotten a few different variations of portions and quality. Sometimes the meat is more over cooked than other times. Sometimes more greasy than other occasions as well.

Last but not least the salsa… I cannot seem to be able to pour salsa and put a lid on the container without getting salsa or water all over my hands. But the salsa is fabulous…❤️ Especially the habanero. It goes great with the food. But it does seem like it’s becoming less consistent with the spice and flavor as time goes by. From my experience I know that the locals complain about sauces from taco shops being too hot and how they should change it. Hopefully this is not the case here.

Overall because they have ingredients in their food that I cannot eat (ie. Cheese and sour cream) .. it’s more difficult for them to take my order. I hope they get their timing and consistency down for the various times of the day and I hope they do well here in the community. Last word, a California burrito should not cost $10, especially if I take out the sour cream, guac and cheese. I guess at that point it’s no longer a Cali burrito, lol
