This place has really good food, much better tasting than the Shari’s that used to be at this location. I’ve been twice now, once for an early breakfast and once for lunch. The food is amazingly good. For breakfast I had a vegetarian omelette with toast and strawberries. They omelette was really stuffed with a great mix of each veggie in it. My wife had the combo plate with eggs, a biscuit with gravy. The biscuit was easily the size of two biscuits at most places. For the lunch visit I had the taco salad with grilled chicken served in a fried tortilla bowl. It was huge with so many ingredients, all delicious. My wife had a Ruben sandwich with fries and loved it. The prices are reasonable and the staff are really friendly. I strongly recommend Black Bear for a delicious, decent priced meal any time of day. Next I can’t wait to try their all you can eat fish fry every Friday night!

We loved our visit to Black Bear Diner! Everything was delicious and comforting in the best way. I had the chicken sausage egg white scramble, and it was fantastic—full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and surprisingly light while still being super satisfying. It felt like a great balance of hearty and wholesome.
My husband ordered the crispy chicken Cobb salad, and wow—huge portion, fresh ingredients, and the chicken was perfectly crispy. Every bite was packed with flavor, and it was clearly made with care.
Black Bear Diner really delivers on quality, generous portions, and feel-good comfort food. We left happy and full and are already looking forward to coming back!

Wow, consistency (and awesome food) is the word. We have been to a number of Black Bear (BB) restaurants in different states, and the constant quality remains in all of them. Excellent food, large portions, excellent service, competitive price. We will be back for more great food. Come hungry and feed your bear appetite.
The taco salads are enormous as the photo and video shows. My wife could not finish hers. I barely can eat it all when I order them. The house made salsa had a bite to it (hot) and a great Mexican flavor.

If you like pollock fish, the “All you can eat” Friday special is the best choice. (See photos) The large proportion you can tell is real fish, not re-manufactured servings. The fish has a mild fishy taste. First piece was slightly over cooked, the 2 and 3rd servings were cooked just right. Yes, 2nd and 3rd servings of fries are available upon request. Otherwise, they just bring out the additional fish.

Hush puppies that come with the fish are excellently cooked, crunchy on the outside, soft inside cornmeal. Perfect for adding butter and pancake syrup on them.

For my taste, the coleslaw is worth the fish dinner, creamy sauce, not over dilly nor vinegar saturated. It’s hard to find good slaw and BB Salem delivers to my taste preference.

It’s worth noting that we picked Halloween night, dinner hour to visit BB Salem. The wait time for a table for two people started out at 25 min. By the time we got our table, it was up to 40 min. When we were seated, our waitress was friendly and took the time required to take our order without us feeling rushed. Excellent customer service skills. Our food arrived quickly despite the high volume of customers. The restaurant was clean. If BB Salem popularity continues to grow, this establishment is going to be to small for the demand as we witnessed that night. The owners will need to seek out another location that can serve a larger population.

We have been anxiously waiting for this place to open. We have eaten at the Bend and Wilsonville locations and love it, so to have one so close is awesome. Parking was a bit difficult at a busy time of morning around 10 am. But our wait was only half an hour. Parking is definitely not big enough for this restaurant. Might have worked for Shari’s but this is no Shari’s. Our food was really good. My husband got the Denver omelet and it was filled with Iots of ham and cheese. So he was very happy. I got the Big bear build your own, with ham, eggs and cinnamon roll French toast. So yummy! We saw a waitress pouring samples of orange juice for the people still waiting to be seated. We never buy orange juice or milk as its just too expensive. We asked our waitress for a sample and couldn’t believe how good it is! The absolute best orange juice ever! They fresh squeeze it right there at the restaurant! We will always get orange juice from here, from now on! Well worth the price!
Updated: Came for lunch at 2, and parking was good and seating and service was great! Had Cobb salad and hubby had chicken strips and fries. Both were very good and as usual leftovers for later! Yum!

What’s not to love with the newly opened Black Bear Diner?!? Service – amazing. Quick. Efficient. Food- approved with 2 thumbs up by my picky 15 year old son who’s quite hard to please. And the freshly painted interior and well placed bear themed decor is adorable and very family friendly. Pricing – better than the former tenants and much larger portions. All in all what a much needed family friendly place South Salem so desperately needed.

We were a group of 16 people and Mindy was spot on with all of our orders. She has a fantastic personality. She is a great representative for your restaurant. She treated each person with attentiveness as though they were here alone. Will definitely come back. All of the food was also great. Thanks again Mindy for serving us.

Wow what a pleasant dining experience. We showed up for their grand opening day without even knowing. It was busy but they were getting people through in a timely manner with little to no chaos, which is amazing for an opening day. Things seemed very organized. They had the senior staff who obviously had been at other stores wearing one color of t-shirts so you knew who they were. The new staff was looking to them for advice.
My husband had meatloaf mashed potatoes and broccoli. His meatloaf did come out without any gravy on it, but within 30 seconds of the time the plate hit the table. There was one of the senior staff with a bowl of gravy in her hand apologizing. It was quite remarkable. We told them there was no problem. I had the tri-tip very well. The french fries that came on the side were average. I mean they were fine. No special seasoning. Too full for dessert so we’ll have to go back and try again another time. The atmosphere was fun. They have a small “General Store” we picked up a cute little black bare book for the Grandkids

Mindy did not look or act like she wanted to work today. She served kids hot cocoas steaming hot and ended up burning my granddaughters tongue. There was lipstick on my mug and the food is not worth it.

Pretty busy because is is new to Salem. Our service was excellent. The food was good but I think they are still figuring things out in the kitchen. Again I appreciated the service. Their menu is huge so we hope to go back again and again to find our favorites. Update: Stilldoing a good job. Biscuits and gravy rock! Pancakes are tasty. Sad they ran out of Prime Rib – it must be amazing I’m sure.
