The food was good though. The Lobster Mac was great, and the portion size was almost too much to handle. Portions across the board here are solid.
The views are awesome of the lake and boat parking is a plus with plenty of dock spots available for over a dozen boats and even a couple jet ski platforms too.
I would definitely go back.
Food:
The appetizers (cheese curds, jalapeño poppers, duck wontons, and crab cakes) were flavorful, but they tasted like they came straight from the freezer. The real standout was the burgers—huge, juicy, and packed with flavor. The fries were also excellent: perfectly cut with just the right crunch. Unfortunately, the lobster roll was a major disappointment. At $22, it was small, overcooked, and lacked the buttery richness you’d expect. I wouldn’t recommend ordering it. We didn’t try any drinks on this visit.
Atmosphere:
Inside, the restaurant has more of a small-town dive bar feel—open space, plenty of tables, and nothing fancy. The real gem is the deck overlooking the lake, which is where we sat. The outdoor setup is beautiful: comfortable seating, quality umbrellas, and a relaxing lakeside view. Dishes were basic (plastic water cups and cafeteria-style plates), but that worked fine for a casual, down-to-earth lakeside spot. The place definitely has potential to be a warm and welcoming neighborhood favorite.
Service:
This was by far the most disappointing part of the visit, and the main reason we would not return. From the moment we arrived, we didn’t feel welcome. We are not from the area, and it was clear to us that locals were treated with more ease and familiarity. As first-time visitors, we walked up to the patio podium where two staff members were standing. One of them was turned away, but the other looked directly at me, then immediately turned back to continue her conversation with her coworker, ignoring that we were waiting. I stood there for several seconds, expecting at least a greeting or instruction, but none came. There was no clear sign about seating, and as visitors unfamiliar with the restaurant’s “seat yourself” policy, we felt awkward and out of place. My recommendation: if seating is open, post a clear, visible sign so that travelers aren’t left standing around wondering what to do.
When we finally went inside, a gentleman at the entrance greeted us warmly and explained the process, which was appreciated. Once seated, however, the service remained inconsistent and slow despite the restaurant not being busy (plenty of empty tables that evening). It took several minutes before our server came by. While she was polite once she did arrive, she was not attentive. She brought out small plates for appetizers but didn’t take our entrée order, even though we were ready and even when one of my party members tried to speak up. She left so quickly that we had to flag her down later—at which point we also had to request additional cutlery, since only one place setting had been given to our table of four.
The appetizers came out, but again, service lagged. Waters were not refilled even after glasses were empty, and our server only checked on us once. The most frustrating part was the sense that we weren’t being paid attention to, especially when we noticed another server stop to chat and check on a nearby table while completely bypassing ours. It reinforced the feeling that, as outsiders, we weren’t made to feel like welcome guests.
Overall:
The burgers alone make this place worth trying, and the lakeside deck is beautiful. Unfortunately, the service was poor enough to outweigh the positives. We didn’t feel welcome as visitors from outside the area, and the lack of attentiveness throughout the evening left us disappointed. With better training, clearer communication, and more awareness of how first-time guests are treated, this could become a great spot. But as it stands, we would not return.
Vibe Review: What an upgrade from the previous place! I’m excited to see all the enhancements over the next year. New docks and tables are on the way, and the new chairs are a massive upgrade. Live music and a fun atmosphere are always a priority here. This spot will definitely become a weekly staple.
People Review:
– Liz: The owner of all the Miz Up’s is a straight shooter who knows how to treat her clients and staff. She’s all about providing a great experience, and it will only keep getting better. The vibe is already amazing! Also, love that she picked Tito’s, Windsor, and Bacardi as the rails.
– Jackson: A great server who took excellent care of us. He’s a local on the lake and happy to be working there this summer.
Food Review:
– A+ Walleye Sandwich: The walleye alone was an A++. Massive serving and a crowd favorite in our group.
– A+ Bloody Mary: Will always be a hit for brunch or lunch. Loaded with all the Wisconsin bests
– A+ Jalapeño Burger: Whoa… amazing flavor profile. Thick burger patty with caramelized bacon, cream cheese, and house-made jam.
– Walleye Fingers: Also a great appetizer to share.
– D Lobster Roll: We didn’t expect this on the menu in Amery, and honestly, it’s not needed. It was the only dish we wouldn’t order again, and we won’t miss it if it’s gone.
Recommendation: Can we please add a honey mustard or spicy aioli to the menu as a house-favorite sauce!?
P.S. This review wasn’t influenced by our massive pull-tab winner, but that was a fun bonus
Drove from the Twin Cities just to have lunch.
All of our food was great.
Burgers were cooked perfectly, juicy and very filling!
Cheese curds as a side were great.
The WAPO (fish) sandwich was almost too big to finish.
You won’t leave hungry that’s for sure!
The patio on the lake was nice. Great place for watching fisherman. Saw a couple guys fight to pull a big one right in right in front of us.
We were told they have only owned it for a few years.
Nice to see they are fixing it up. Looks like a fresh coat of paint was coming soon on the inside.
We will certainly be back!
It was very busy, so that may have had something to do with it. But I wish I would have just gotten a burger. Good reviews on that.
What wonderful neighbors as well! The recent remodel to have the lakeside patio into the restaurant has been awesome. The live music on the weekend has been a joy to listen to, even off my dock!
Thank you Waterside and The Mix Up!
