Our first visit to Black Gryphon in Elizabethtown PA was a memorable and overall enjoyable dining experience that brought a subtle taste of Wales to our table.

Appetizers
We started with two appetizers the Artichoke and Bitter Greens Dip and the Welsh Rarebit Fondue. The dip was a hit with the whole family. It was rich and flavorful and the bitter greens added a nice contrast to the creamy base.

The fondue was not as well received. It seemed like it may have been thickened with flour which gave it a grainy texture. We were expecting something smoother and creamier. It was not unpleasant but we are unlikely to order it again.

Entrees
For main dishes we had the Traditional Welsh Fish and Chips the 10oz Grilled Strip Steak an Amish Pork Chop special and the Crab Cake Sandwich.

The Fish and Chips were tasty. The fish was fresh and well cooked. However it did not seem like a true tempura batter. It lacked the light airy crispiness typically expected from tempura. The portion was also smaller than we expected. One more piece of fish would have helped justify the price.

The Strip Steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and came as two smaller cuts. The stwmp was excellent and even the kid enjoyed it. We did not notice much in the way of mushrooms onions or herb butter on the steak as described. The meat was well prepared but could have used more seasoning or flavor.

The Amish Pork Chop with Apple Gravy was the highlight of the night. It was juicy flavorful and paired well with the sweet apple gravy. The mac and cheese was decent and made a good side for the dish.

Our daughter had the Crab Cake Sandwich. She did not share any of it which usually means it was very good.

Drinks
We had two Cokes and an unsweetened iced tea. The tea had a smooth mellow flavor and was very enjoyable.

Desserts
For dessert my wife and daughter each ordered the BF Fudge Creme Brulee while I had a scoop of Elderberry Ice Cream. The creme brulee was outstanding with a crisp sugar top and a deep rich chocolate flavor that moved from a mild dark chocolate to a smooth milk chocolate. The elderberry ice cream was creamy and had a unique fruity taste. It was my first time trying elderberry ice cream and I hope to have it again.

Service
The service was perfect. Staff were friendly, attentive, and timed the courses just right. We felt welcomed and relaxed and never rushed.

Final Thoughts
Black Gryphon offers a thoughtful mix of comfort food and creative flavors with a touch of Welsh inspiration. Not every dish was a standout but the overall experience was positive and the service was exceptional. We are definitely looking forward to a return visit especially for that pork chop and creme brulee.

Our bill was $170 after taxes. We ordered more than most families of three would order, however, we like to explore when we try a new (to us) place.

Splendid food, very relaxing atmosphere, and our waiter was superb! He did such a great job taking care of me and my husband while taking care of other guests 🙂 The chocolate hot wings were definitely top tier and so unique. This restaurant is definitely rare. A must visit!

10/10 would return! I went for dinner with my 4yr old and my husband on a Thrusday night. I will say it was pretty dead in there, but it was nice not to have a lot of people around. The food was A+, and the service was fantastic! The server we had knew everything, he told us the origin of the restaurant and did help explain everything on the menu so well. Also side note, the art work on the walls were pretty awesome, and for sale too!

We got the dan dan wings, chocolate hot wings, rainy night mocktail, crème brûlée all were really good. Our waiter was so nice and helped resolve a couple issues that came up. We definitely plan on coming back, there are so many interesting options available and I’m sure they’re all good.

Wonderful farm to table experience that makes me want to come back for more. An amazing seasonal menu that gives a large variety of eaters something to choose from. The staff was very friendly, personable and well spoken about their menu. Great selection of prohibition style cocktails and locally/independent brewery’s. They even have smaller ounces of beers on tap for you to purchase incase you either aren’t looking to drink a lot or you were looking for flights, I highly recommend getting a few and sampling. Priced reasonably in my opinion for the quality and care that each dish receives and you are helping local businesses as well. The music, atmosphere, staff and overall vibe makes this a must hit stop if you are in the area, or heck, even if you are looking to try something new; it was worth a 30 minute drive from where I was located. Give this place a shot, you won’t be disappointed!
Extra tip, save room for dessert, it’s worth it.

The staff is incredible and every time I come here the food is delicious. They do a menu change 3 times a year along with the art work. Very nice atmosphere! And the chocolate wings (as weird as they sound) are INCREDIBLE!

We finally went in after living here for 5 years and I’m so glad we did! I’ve been to over 400 breweries and the tap list at Black Gryphon has some real winners on it. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. Staff super friendly and welcoming. We had a great time and I’ll be bringing my craft beer crew frequently for some good brews. Cheers!

A Hidde GEM that is not so hidden. Tony the owner is very passionate about the arts. From food to drinks to the art hanging on the wall and the music that is played he puts thought into it all. This Farm to table restaurant is a fusion of foods. Every flavor, spice and sauce is there for a reason. From the start of the meal to the dessert you could not go wrong with anything on this seasonal changing menu. 12/10 hands down recommend.
Don’t forget to make a reservation so they know you are coming.

Excellent local bar with wonderful service (Dave rocks! Very friendly) and even better food.

The place was warm and inviting, not too loud, and is exactly the kind of place i would want to take my friends for a night after work for drinks.

The menu changes 3 times a year and makes strong use of local farms and suppliers.
Will for sure be coming again!

This place is my new favorite. We’ve gone twice now. They make a decadent steak, and the perfect chicken fingers. After dinner, you NEED a Cafe Pucci. The server is awesome, and I loved that he remembered us.
