My fiancé and I were looking forward to dining at Nathan Marsh after seeing the restaurant featured frequently on social media. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet expectations and ultimately felt overrated.

Given that the restaurant was recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2021, I anticipated a more elevated culinary experience. The food itself was acceptable but largely unremarkable. The filet was fine, though not a standout, and the salad was similarly underwhelming. The lemon dessert with the marshmallow topping was the highlight of the meal and genuinely enjoyable.

We arrived with reservations; however, our initial interaction with the manager was unwelcoming and set an uncomfortable tone at the start of the evening. While we chose to move forward and enjoy our dinner regardless, this first impression was disappointing. I will note that our server was pleasant, attentive, and accommodating, which we appreciated.

It was also noticeable that the manager made a point to check in with surrounding tables throughout the evening, but did not engage with ours, which felt inconsistent and somewhat awkward.

Additionally, the dining room was very crowded and loud. Guests seeking a more intimate or conversational dining experience may find this environment challenging.

For those looking for exceptional food paired with attentive service in a more relaxed setting, I would instead recommend Ember or Mattei’s Tavern, both of which have consistently delivered excellent experiences.

Would I return? No.

Service and atmosphere were very nice. The accommodated our party beautifully. The food was nice presented and great flavors. Will go again to try more dishes and maybe weather permitting sit on the patio. They did a fabulous job of decorating for the holidays. So charming.

I love this place! The pulpo is as good or better than any I have had. The caesar salad was possibly the best I’ve ever had! Service is usually excellent. I was greeted warmly and received well, every time I walked into this place. The bartenders are artists!

Came in on March 2nd for our engagement. We’d only been engaged a matter of hours, but Reed K. Our server and the whole staff made our evening very memorable! Delicious food in minutes and EXCELLENT service. Reed was Very polite, attentive, and the food was to die for. Fresh pasta, tender ribeye steak, and pork chop? Surprisingly the best dish of the night! We will definitely be returning. Thanks Reed and the whole staff for making an unforgettable evening!

A really cool downtown place near the older part of SLO. Service and ambiance was great. Shrimp cocktail with large fresh shrimp was the best I’ve had in a long time. Mixed drinks are well done with excellent choices. Main courses are ok but nothing special, the menu is getting old and hasn’t really changed in over two years – basic beef, chicken, farmed salmon and average pasta choices. It’s time to mix things up a bit, make your entrees as exciting as your drinks.

A must go. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. The balance of flavors speaks to how much thought went into the dishes and their execution.

Another lovely meal from Nate’s on Marsh! The food is consistently delicious; the service is great; and the ambiance is unique and interesting. We usually get the Pork Chop as it by far one of my favorite places to enjoy this dish. We happened to come in on a Thursday evening and it was their 50% off any bottle of wine under $100. DANGEROUS! We had a lovely evening of delicious fine dining food and a little too much wine.

Nate’s on Marsh is the kind of Italian-style restaurant that you expect to find in a much larger city, and easily one of my favorite 3 restaurants in San Luis Obispo. The service is top notch, food quality is very high, and the atmosphere is friendly, yet sophisticated. On each of my visits, I’ve been impressed with the knowledgeable and friendly servers who are typically familiar with each of the dishes and make thoughtful recommendations. The Italian pasta dishes are prepared perfectly, and the steaks are grilled exactly as ordered. There are several interesting appetizers, including a charred octopus, which is exceptional. Nate’s offers an interesting and diverse wine menu with interesting Italian choices, as you might expect. There are a variety of by the glass and bottle choices, reasonably priced (a hefty $35 corkage fee though). The restaurant is set in an old but nicely restored house on Marsh street near downtown San Luis Obispo. In addition to the warm and welcoming indoor areas, there is a lovely outdoor patio, with heat lamps. There is also a 5-seat bar that is open all day, on a first-come, first-served basis. Overall, this is a delightful restaurant that consistently delivers. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality and level of service.
