We walked in and saw that it was to go and outside seating only. I ordered the beef brisket tatter toddles and the wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich. The tatter toddles were covered in brisket and cheese. By itself, it was kind of dry and bland. Add a little bbq sauce and sour cream, it becomes something different. The toddles were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, just like a good french fry. The brisket had a good bark but was a little too chopped for my tastes. Overall a good dish. The pulled pork sandwich was piled high with pork. With a little bit of sauce, it becomes wonderful. The wife also said the pork was a little too finely chopped.
A good BBQ joint. We will return when we are free during the day.
So contrary to what some other reviewers on the interwebs may say, S&S does actually smoke their meat – all of the meat actually.
The pork ribs are delicious and fall off the bone tender. I prefer them without the extra sauce on the side and the same is true for the pulled pork. The meat is good enough without it. (Though the sauce is good!) The beef ribs are also REALLY good – I had never had beef ribs like this before having them from S&S. Again, they are super tender and that crust on the outside is like a meaty kind of dessert for lack of a better way of describing it. They look like T-Rex’s still roam Nevada and every so often they hunt one of them to give us ribs. They also do pulled pork and brisket.
The real star here though is the brisket. I used to travel the country for work and have been lucky enough to have bbq in a variety of states – many of them Southern. S&S can battle any one of them and come out on top. Their brisket is tender, meaty, juicy… they are awesome for people like me who prefer the leaner side (as I tell them frequently, I don’t like the “globby” side of meat” because they give you a choice between the fatty side and the leaner side.
Now, while I just said the star is the brisket (which I meant) the reality is that it’s the people at Sparks & Smoke that put them above and beyond just happening to be a good bbq joint. See, I happen to have food allergies. A lot of them. When I first approached S&S about my allergies, they literally went through EVERY ingredient for EVERYTHING they cook/sell to see what was and was not safe for me. One of the things that was unsafe was the cornbread. They literally changed their ingredients for their cornbread so that it was safe for me to eat. I had only been there 2-3 times at the time they did this so I was hardly what most places would consider a regular… but they still did it. If that is not the definition of a quality business, I don’t know what is.
There are fancier places in Reno for sure. Places with bigger menus. But you would be hard pressed to find a place that takes better care of its customers, takes more pride in their product and you WON’T find a place within a few hundred miles that puts out a better quality of bbq.
I’d even trek to Sparks for them now. (Please oh please if you guys read this, don’t move to Sparks though…)
