I went here this past Saturday for a birthday dinner and I must say I’m disappointed. I’m not sure how they got such high reviews because the food is average. 75% of my dinner party (20+ people) were not impressed. Let me break it down.

Pros: They did have amazing service and accommodated my large family and I comfortably and promptly. One appetizer was a 10/10 and that was the peel shrimp. The flavor was superb and the shrimp was large. As far as dessert, the chocolate pecan pie is to die for! I was hesitant because it said it’s a pie, but it taste like a large brownie with icecream. . The server was nice and got all the orders correct.

Cons- The food was average. Presentation was alright, but everything lacked flavor or seasoning. The cornbread they put on the table is dry and if you aren’t careful you will choke. The salmon was ok, but the vegetables side was disgusting. It tasted like they cooked it with no seasoning then threw a sprinkle of seasoning on top for looks. Another family members salmon was burnt. The chicken was dry. The fries were OK. They don’t have steak sauce here.

-The deviled eggs was heartbreaking. It definitely seemed as if they took out the yolk, mixed it with mayo, and just put it back in the egg. No seasoning, no other condiments, no nothing. You can’t be in the south and mess up cornbread AND deviled eggs.

Side note– reviews raved on and on about drinks…. I got the jungle juice and it was nothing impressive.

I expected more looking at other reviews, but instead I was let down.

For our first downtown Greenville dining experience, this was disappointingly underwhelming. The food was just okay: the flavor of the shrimp and grits was good; the specialty salad was different than I expected and okay. The restaurant was SO LOUD we could barely converse at our table. The server was pleasant and helpful with our party’s need to consider gluten-free options. They did seem understaffed as they were covering more tables than allowed them to be attentive. Prices were very reasonable.

Hubby and I were in town for a couple of hours and stopped here to eat. First mistake. When I reached out to a local friend and she described this place as “decent” that should’ve been my cue. I ordered fried catfish, greens and baked beans with brisket. None of it had flavor or a lick of seasoning. This is not cornmeal style breading like southerners eat. It was almost tempura style in consistency and texture. My husband had shrimp (remove the tails yourself) and grits and was rather pleased. We also ordered the sausage platter which was served cool- almost cold. No heat or warmth to be found. The desserts- fried bread pudding and fruit crisp (we were told peach but received berry- only the topping was eaten)- were beautiful but fell short on flavor. The fried banana’s Foster was pretty good. But we only ate the pastry portion. All in all, if you want shrimp n grits and bananas foster, try them. I personally wouldn’t go back.

Our last stop in our tour of Downtown Greenville restaurants was Smoke in the Water (yes, just like the Deep Purple song). This is a fun taproom with upscale food from what you would expect in a taproom. Cornbread was delivered to nibble on while you decide on your order. I love cornbread but was a little disappointed; it was a bit dry and the flavor tasted like it was trying to be sweet cornbread but wasn’t. Perhaps we just received a bad batch. Our selections: Pimento Cheese (if you’re following us, yes more pimento cheese – don’t judge), Country Cuban with fried okra and The Brisket sandwich with coleslaw. Let’s start with the winners and that would be the pimento cheese and the fried okra. The pimento cheese was served on a tray accompanied by a selection of ‘toppings’ such as bacon, pickles and jalapeños but a close second was the fried okra. It was perfectly crisp with the batter including just a hint of spice which was a pleasant surprise. The brisket sandwich when coupled with any of their house made sauces was a solid choice. The Country Cuban was tasty but requires some sauce due to the amount of pork to bread and toppings ratio it became a bit dry. Our server/bartender, Melissa, was fabulous and ensured food arrived in the right sequence and not all at once.
Overall tasty food and good experience.

The food was delicious. I had the salmon. It was juicy and flavorful with a hint of sweetness. I didn’t like the fried green tomatoes. My friend had squash casserole that was great and crab cakes…very tasty! The spinach dip was just okay…kind of runny.

We came in on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait maybe 15 minutes. We were seated outside upon our request. The guy who waited on us was super friendly and attentive. The food did take forever to come out, but that wasn’t his fault. The shrimp and grits were some of the best I’ve had in Greenville. The ribs, beer butt chicken, and brisket were not the best but still good. The Mac and Cheese is nothing special. The bake beans with brisket tasted like caned beans with no brisket. The adult drinks are nice and strong. It’s worth a try.

The place was nice. I got in and seated but waited for a while and had to ask if I had a server. The cornbread was very dry and no flavor. I got the combo with baked beans , fries, ribs and brisket. The beans and fries were good. The meet was tender and well cooked. I would most likely come back if in the area.

Get the pulled pork!! It has a great flavor without adding any of the 4 homemade sauces they offer. Salads were great. Atmosphere was relaxed. Sides (Mac n cheese and beans) were ok. Everyone was super friendly!! Very reasonably priced so you don’t have to work in the tall buildings to enjoy.
Shrimp appetizer isn’t deveined, just so u know, but it was delish.

Highly recommend this gem in downtown Greenville! The food, ambience, presentation and service were all excellent! Our server Jada recommended the pimento cheese appetizer, the baked beans with brisket and the Jack Daniels Chocolate Chip Pie – all were so good! She was so sweet and made us feel like family. The chicken salad, potato cake and Cuban were also delicious. To top it off, the prices were almost unbelievable. To get entrees of this calibre for less than $10??? Amazing! Definitely a new favorite!

Oh my goodness the food here is mouthwatering and reasonably priced. We sat at the bar since the place was packed, and the two bartenders were so friendly.

We started off with potato jackets with the pulled pork on them. They were huge, and very flavorful. Then we had the sampler dinner with fall of the bone ribs and super moist beer can chicken.

For the side we had squash casserole- I wasn’t sure what to expect but the flavored and texture were so good I didn’t want to share it. The baked beans had pieces of brisket and were seasoned perfectly. And the creamed spinach was really good.

Also it must have been happy hour because our drinks were crazy cheap. Would definitely go again.
