Reviews
The internal design is pretty simple.
It’s a pleasant spot near Aurora Town Square and the nearby churches that often host concerts. The interior design is fairly simple. The music is already too loud before 10 p.m., but once the DJ arrives at 10, you quickly realize that earlier it actually wasn’t loud at all.
The place usually offers at least six types of oysters.
Barstool (Rustico Bay, PEI) – $2.75
Although these oysters come from the same area as Sweet Island Kiss, they’re noticeably less interesting: smaller, with a thinner, less “meaty” texture. I was impressed by the other three varieties, but I’d recommend skipping these. If I may say so, they’re a pale shadow of the Sweet Island Kiss oysters produced in the very same region.
The other three varieties were excellent – pretty large, meaty, and full of flavor. I can’t single out just one, as all three were truly enjoyable (price usually give you a sense of size):
Raspberry Point (Hope River, PEI) – $3.25
Sweet Island Kiss (Rustico Bay, PEI) – $3.25
Lucky Limes (New London Bay, PEI) – $3.75 (the biggest and arguably the best)
Grilled Calamari
It’s a pretty good dish, not outstanding, but tender and greens with balsamic vinegar paired nicely.
Baked Oyster – Lobster
Oysters baked with cream, lobster meat, aged cheddar, and chives. What’s a great idea where the flavors complement each other beautifully. Rich, savory, and very satisfying.
Bocca Della V Pinot Grigio
Too bitter and sour for oysters; perhaps it would pair better with pasta.
Chateau Diana Sparkling Moscato
A bit too sweet for oysters, but overall a pleasant wine for anyone who enjoys the sweeter end of the spectrum – nowhere near icewine level, but still dessert-leaning.
Crème Brûlée
Not outstanding, but definitely above average. Not overly sweet, with nice fresh berry notes.
Overall:
A very good destination for oyster lovers—just don’t come too late, unless you’re ready for loud music to overpower your gastronomic experience.
The restaurant was not very busy on Sunday and it appeared to be understaffed. We had booked a reservation through Open Table for Sunday at 6:30, and we had requested the standard seating option. Instead, they tried to seat us at a high top table right by the bar. We asked for a table instead.
We then waited about 25 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our order. In the meantime, no one even came to ask us if we wanted a drink order.
When the waitress finally came, we ordered the grilled calamari and garlic bread. They came relatively quickly and they were delicious. The appetizers were probably the best part of the experience at Aw Shucks.
However, when our main dishes arrived we were extremely disappointed. I ordered fettuccini with 1/2 a lobster tail and my husband and son ordered the chicken/mushroom fettuccini. The pastas were cold, sticky and gummy. I’m sure if the pasta dishes had been served immediately when they were still pipping hot they would have been much tastier. We didn’t see the waitress to complain as she was busy with other tables and simultaneously working at the bar so we just ate our pastas.
Once we finished our meal It took the waitress a while to come to check on us. When she finally came, she had our bill ready. She never asked us if we wanted any coffee or dessert, nor was there any acknowledgement that it was my husband’s birthday. I had indicated this on the Open Table reservation and would have ordered a dessert for him.
As such, we left and went to have coffee and dessert elsewhere. We will not be going to this restaurant ever again.
The menu has a great variety of fresh seafood options, and everything we tried was delicious. We tried both the fresh oysters and baked oysters. All the pasta’s we had were very creamy and well done. It’s clear that Aw Shucks takes pride in both their food and their service. I definitely recommend to any seafood lovers in the area.
Atmosphere is great when it’s primo days for amazing music y2k, hiphop, soca and dancehall.
