I visited after reading the glowing reviews and ordered beef tacos and a sangria. The place wasn’t busy, but the tortillas on all my tacos were cold and breaking apart. I had one reheated, but the rest were the same, and I mostly ended up eating just the protein. For almost $50 on seven tacos, it was frustrating.
The manager was kind, brought a better-made taco, and even offered dessert, but the overall experience just wasn’t enjoyable. The food feels more like a “Chipotle-style” taco setup, which might work if you’re coming in after drinks—but stay away if you’re sober and actually want to enjoy your meal. Friendly service, but the cold tortillas were a dealbreaker for me.

Consistency is excellent across every Velvet Taco I’ve been to. As a vegetarian, I recommend the Buffalo Cauliflower and Nashville Hot Tofu tacos (no, don’t get the fried paneer). I always order the Crisp Tots no bacon (the goat cheese and sunny egg combine together to make a delectable flavor). Dining space is very little, though this is the case with most Velvet Tacos nationwide other than maybe the Lincoln Park location. This is a great place to get food after going out as they are open very late. Understand that late night is honestly probably one of their busiest times, so don’t expect great seating availability. But the food is a 10/10 so I can’t really complain!

Enjoyed lunch here in Gold Coast area of Chicago. Had Chicken Tacos combo with salsa which tasted so good. Tried the guacamole and it was yummy. Fast service. Clean restroom. Upstairs had extra seating. Great experience.

Paradise for drunk people at 3 AM on a Saturday night. Very few places in the city, where you can find a bite to eat that late night. The tacos are by no means authentic, but that is their beauty and they don’t claim to be authentic either. Get the batter, cauliflower taco. It’s so good that you will not miss the meat. All their choices are pretty good, and you can’t go wrong. The only thing is, there might be a long queue of other drunk people trying to get their food and it might not be fun, waiting in line. Can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to get to the counter to place your order and then another 10 to 15 minutes to get your order.

This is one of the most iconic taco places in Chicago. This location on State Street is right in the heart of Gold Coast. This is a great place to go when you need a bite, but don’t want to go into one of the mega expensive restaurants nearby. They have Great vegetarian options and also a good selection of beer and cocktails. Don’t even think about parking nearby without a SpotHero.

Considering the price of the tacos, i was pleasantly surprised to see it came with two. Even at 3.25 a pop, the amount of meat on this taco is UNACCEPTABLE. Granted, if you order other tacos, the proportions are a lot better, so it’s just an expensive taco. I’ve had better tacos for $3, and very similar ones for $1…
