This place never disappoints. The only qualms I have at this restaurant is the seating is very limited and the bathroom is for employees and guests.
The grilled scallops are some of the best I’ve had anywhere, the fried oysters are divine, the staff are super friendly and helpful. Oh, and the sushi is just ok. It’s honestly not the best, but truly hits the spot better than grocery store sushi ever could.

Kabuto is exactly what you hope for when you pull up to a Japanese spot tucked into a Pantops strip mall—nothing fancy, but solid food that delivers. The décor inside isn’t winning any awards, but let’s be real: you’re not here for the ambiance. You’re here for well-seasoned hibachi and sushi that hits the spot without breaking the bank.
I highly recommend the chicken and steak combo with rice—everything was cooked just right, and the sweet sauce paired perfectly with the fried rice. Sushi-wise, the California, M16, and UVA rolls were all excellent. The eel on the UVA roll was sticky, sweet, and straight-up addicting.
Also worth mentioning: the miso soup was light and refreshing, a nice way to start the meal. All in all, Kabuto is a great go-to if you’re craving Japanese food on this side of town.

This place is awesome! I’ve been coming in for lunch for a few months now and I have never been let down. I’ve probably been there 50 times.
Tremendous consistency. Whoever cooks the food and makes the sushi knows what they are doing!
They also don’t cut corners on quality. Their soup and their fried rice are rich with ingredients (onions, mushrooms, etc)
Staff is very friendly and they run a really efficient operation.
10/10 would recommend!

In town for a conference. order lunch sushi 3 roll.. disappointing… mostly rice, very little filling. the roll was the thickness of a finger.. I could taste no filling at all.. Ive been eating sushi most of my adult life and I have NEVER had anything this bad…waste of $20 which included a $3 tip.. sad… I would not return.. I should have known when the place had 2 people at the peak of lunch hour…

The food was amazing . Very decent sized proportion. The server was so sweet and prompt. The food didn’t take too long being they were so busy . Everything was great. I also had the Alaska roll , it was pretty good with soy sauce. The veggies and broccoli were soooo good .

10/10. Made an online order and they forgot to put in my cheese wontons. They took it upon themselves to call me and let me know they were forgotten. They also asked if I was too far. I turned around and went back and they were so polite and also gave us free ice cream as an apology. Great service and great food!

Your Meal Key Way online ordering app is garbage. Verified my email twice and phone number three times and each time it loaded me back into the order screen with no items in my checkout. After seeing my cart emptied five times and still unable to order, I ordered from a different restaurant.
I’ll still come in person for dinner but probably the last time I’ll try to order takeout. Here’s a tip, let me check out as a guest. Not everything needs to be this complicated, especially ordering takeout.

Service is my favorite thing about Kabuto. I love the lunch special (menu attached) you get soup with each lunch special whether its hibachi or sushi. Place really fills up on a weekday at noon! Located in pantops.

We ate here on a Thursday night for our son’s 15th birthday. It was so good! Excellent service and food. The hibachi was delicious — smoky and peppery and the veggies were cooked perfectly. It came with really delicious soup that I haven’t had other places, some kind of mushroom broth that was so good. And the waiter was very friendly. Rolls were also really good. Can’t say enough good!
