Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with the overall experience. The service felt mediocre and we didn’t feel particularly looked after. We were surrounded by several large birthday groups which made the atmosphere extremely loud, to the point where my boyfriend and I struggled to hear each other throughout the evening.
While my pasta was tasty, the presentation didn’t reflect the price point, which added to the feeling that the experience didn’t quite justify what we paid. I also appreciate that service charges are standard practice, however we only interacted with one waiter briefly during the entire evening, which made the added charge feel disproportionate.
It wasn’t a bad evening overall, but for the price we paid, we expected a much higher level of service and overall experience. I wanted to bring this to your attention as we’ve previously heard such positive things about San Carlo.
Myself and my husband walked into the restaurant and asked if we can take the 6:15 reservation as we are from the US and the internet was slow to complete the reservation. The hostess said they had no tables available. There were multiple times available for this evening on their reservation engine. Finally the reservation went through on the website and we walked into the restaurant again. The hostess began to scold me that she told me they did not have a table available and how dare I make a reservation. I explained that I made one on their site and she said you don’t go through the google website. I said I would be happy to leave if she did not charge me the prepaid £20 fee for the reservation. She said no, wait at the bar. The next staff who seated us called us “ the walk in.” I said no, I made a reservation and she said so you are the walk in. She threw our menus on a table and walked away. Never in all my travels have I been treated so poorly.
Then the food came out. The lasagne was a deconstructed mess of cheese, mushy noodles, and meat sauce stew. The bruschetta was soggy toast with halved cherry tomatoes, no seasoning, balsamic glaze, or other things that make bruschetta . Extremely disappointing.
Do not ruin your evening by coming here.
