Social Profile:

Our story began in 2003 when head chef Shizhou Da came to the US with the original recipe for Xiao Long Bao —Chinese steamed soup dumplings. She is the 5th generation of the original chef who created the very first Xiao Long Bao in China and has over 30 years of experience in making fresh, traditional homemade Shanghai style dim sum. After 5 years’ restaurant business in North Jersey and New York, Chef Shizhou Da and her daughter Sally decided to bring Shanghai’s finest dumplings to Philadelphia in 2013. They chose a great restaurant location in Philly Chinatown at 1020 Race Street and attracted more and more people to come to try a bite of Shanghai style dim sum.

Chinese fixture with BYOB policy, offering a range of dumplings, plus classic rice and noodle meals in a sleek space.

i’ve gone here twice — both times were great! the scallion noodles are delicious and the diced chicken is nice and crispy. i LOVE the dumplings here and will order like 3 things of pork and chive dumplings. my partner and i also tried the duck noodles and the pork here — very good! we always entertain coming back here.

We’re not city people (but we love city food) so we weren’t sure how parking / wait time / experience would be in the middle of Philly Chinatown, during peak lunch hours, especially with a squirmy kids.

There’s a parking garage maybe 3 stores away (check). When we walked there, we saw quite a few people standing outside, but it went quick and took less than 10min for us to get seated inside (check). Because of previously mentioned squirmy kids, we got a booth seat, which was spacious enough to fit them AND all food we ordered (check).

Xiaolongbaos, scallion pancake, shrimp shumai, and a giant bowl of pork noodles. Food came fast, maybe because we ordered common items or Dim Sum Garden is just talented. Either way, we gobbled it everything almost as fast as we got them. It helps that most of the food were on the softer side, and required minimal chewing ha!

I liked that the scallion pancakes was lightly salted, and that all the food was warm but not hot, so we could eat them immediately. Loved the savory filling for the shumai, and the XLB portions were generous. And we kept on dreaming about those noodles long after we left the city… so good.

Cash only but very reasonable prices, with ATM onsite. Absolutely recommended for legit comfort chinese foods.

We have a ritual of getting dim sum here almost every Friday night. You may have to wait a bit for a table on the weekends but typically the turnover and service is pretty quick. Food is delicious!

For a place this popular and busy, the management should do a better job of keeping the bathrooms clean.

This place has always been a favorite of mine, but the renovated location two doors down adds an amazing atmosphere and upscale ambience to the always fantastic food. On top of that, Ryan provides a level of service that is unmatched. I moved away years ago, and every time I come back to town I bring whoever I’m with to get pork soup dumplings. A favorite experience of mine, and I never leave hungry. Every time I leave, I can’t wait to come back. Love this place, don’t miss out!

TLDR: Avoid, I would not recommend to my enemy unless I really hated them.

Potential health violation? Dirty dishes replaced with “fresh” dirty dishes. (the new place setting had dried pieces of leftover food from the previous use)

Sticky! Everything was sticky, grime sticky, not dumpling sauce sticky. The bottom of dish plates, the individual plates, the bowl, the spoon

Cash-only restaurant that charges tax (pick one, you know?)

We had tried this restaurant as a late night option at 9pm. Our one server was a gem—which is why I gave a 2 star instead of a 1 star. Other than that, the sheer cleanliness (or lack thereof) ruined the whole food experience—I was too grossed using the sticky utensils and plates let alone think about how “clean” the kitchen where the food is made is.

decent food:
– shanghai soup dumplings (heavy hand with the sauce) 3/5
– crispy garlic lettuce — crunchy! 4/5
– salt and pepper wings — salty! good fry 3.5/5

Other food (1/5)
– shrimp dumplings had thick wrapper that was too chewy and felt frozen
– fish sour soup lacked flavor and spice
– garlic bean sprouts looked old and wilted, there was a layer of white film on top and the sauce was a little too thick and corn-starchy

The lyche martinis were the best and the fried dumplings I cant get over how good this place was and its walking distance from the convention they were able to take us even after a historic storm late too. Really nice

Service was terrible. The waiter was on his phone the whole time and placing an order, getting the check and paying took forever. Also cash only. Not only is it already an inconvenience, but of course they have atm fees.

The gaint soup dumpling was good but hard to eat. Would only recommend getting the regular ones.

Love this place. Have eaten here several times the past couple months. It’s hands down the best Chinese food in Philly! And the restaurant is new and clean. Service is fast and efficient. I highly recommend it!

The food is AWESOME!!!!!!

The environment is very very stressful and just a flat out bizzare process from start to finish.

The employees all run around yelling and literally toss food on the table as they sprint away.

Not an enjoyable place to have a meal at all however the meal itself is incredibly enjoyable.

We got a table right away on Sunday afternoon before it got too busy. The service was very fast. We order a pork soup dumpling and it was delicious. Then we had a salty duck and white rice. Duck comes with small pieces of bone in it. So be careful. Dried nodules with beef was very good also.
Only cash. Place was packed. I’d go back next time.
