I’ve been to the new Fong’s twice in the last two weeks and both visits were fantastic. It was tough for me to walk into the old Peace Tree space again since it meant a lot to me, but Fong’s has really impressed me. Cute space, great vibe, and the food is back to its OG 2014 quality.

Garlic Galore pizza was amazing, the sesame chicken and fried rice were spot-on both times, and the fried dumplings were perfectly cooked. Even the NA energy drink was good. Our server, Tristen, was awesome, friendly, and fast, and the whole staff has been great both visits.

It will never be Peace Tree, but I’m excited to make new memories here. Definitely my new go-to spot across the street from work.

It was my last night in Des Moines, Iowa this place was recommended by a client. So I tried it out and I got the famous crab ragoon Pizza
And it was all right. I guess i’m just a pepperoni meat lovers fan. All the fancy ingredients, I guess i’m not a big a fan of. I guess I just wanna pepperoni Pizza. But I did want to try their most popular pie.

We sat at the bar. Food is always good. Bartender was super nice and helpful. The new place is meh. Its bigger, more open but boy it’s LOUD. Not the same as the old place. If your looking for an old school vibe with character then don’t come here. It’s now just a regular pizza joint with good bao buns and pizza. Bring ear plugs.
Ps. It does have beautiful views.

Just happened to be passing through Des Moines and drove by Fongs. My wife said it had been on Triple D so I turned in. Very glad we did.
They were having happy hour and any alcoholic drink got a free slice of pizza. We did the MaiTai’s which they limit 2 per person. If you’re a light weight probably makes sense. We got one slice of sausage and one of pepperoni to start. Very thin but good flavor.
In doing some reading it was the Crab Rangoon pizza that Guy came to try so that’s what we did.
Gotta say they do a really good job of their Asian fusion with that. Great flavor. Could have been a bit more imitation krab on it but all in all a great job.
If we were in Des Moines longer we would really like to try some of the other fusion pizzas. Maybe next trip.

Unique: they nail both your regular pepperoni and their signature pizzas like General Tso, which is amazing and I don’t typically like that kind of stuff.
The new location is awesome and seats way more people and parking is readily available. Coke products.

This is one of those restaurants society must do everything to protect and support. It embodies what you love about food. It’s different but different with things you love. They do it perfectly with an unbelievable atmosphere and perfect service. They make sure you’re enjoying every moment of the experience. Let alone the food being delicious. Go there and don’t be bashful or hesitant to order a bunch of different items to try. Anytime I’m in the area this will be one of the stops.

This is one of my favorite places to go when visiting friends in Des Moines. Favorites are crab rangoon pizza and the loaded potato pizza. New location is cool but not quite as cozy as the old downtown location.

Moving my reviews over from Yelp. I’m retired now but there was about a 4-year period where I went there at least once on every trip I made to Des Moines. Originally published 2/2020:

I was in town for a conference and staying at the Hilton. There are a few choices for dinner that are closer but I was intrigued by their story so I chose Fong’s and made the trek without leaving the Skywalk for more than 100′.

I thought I was going to order their Crab Rangoon pizza but changed course once I realized how much cream cheese goes into that pie. According to my waiter, their #1 seller (50-70% of all pizzas sold) is their crab Rangoon pizza.

I ordered their second most popular pizza instead: General Tso Chicken Pizza: General Tso sauce, breaded chicken, water chestnuts, baby corn, roasted red pepper, mozzarella, and asiago cheese topped with fresh green onions. It was spectacular and the fusion really worked well. I liked the cracker-thin crust (I don’t usually) and enjoyed how it served as a vehicle to deliver what came across exactly like Chinese food on top of pizza. An unlikely combination without a doubt but it really worked. Were it just a pizza, it would be a decent pizza. Were it just Chinese food, it would be decent Chinese food. Somehow 1+1=3 when it comes to their menu.

It’s worth noting that the waiter told me a little about the history of the place. Apparently they were a family-run Chinese restaurant for 100 years before they were forced to close due to a fire in the apartment building above the restaurant. The family lost interest in the restaurant business in the two years it took to regain their occupancy permit and agreed to sell to a restaurant group. The new owners wanted to do a pizza concept and decided to keep some of the Asian dishes on the menu…just on top of pizzas. They now have 4 locations.

Honestly, this would probably be a 3-4 star place in a city where you would expect to find something wacky like what they do. Put it in the Midwest (Iowa, no less) and they certainly deserve a bump for being so “out there” in such a “not out there” place.

This place is a staple in Des Moines and shouldn’t be missed! Their location is nice and airy compared to the old place The atmosphere is relaxed and tastefully decorated to suit their theme. Onto the food! The Crab Rangoon pizza is an obvious choice, but don’t sleep on any of the other offerings, whether they’re of an Asian persuasion or from the Iowa portion of the menu. My personal favorite has to be the Bang Bang chicken pizza! Give the menu a good once or twice over though and pick what sounds good to you because you really can’t go wrong! The wait was short and our server Kamrie always very polite and friendly. I look forward to coming back very soon.
