First time we have tried His Place. The service was really great. Everyone was very friendly to each person that walked in the door. Even know they were packed they still all seemed to be having a great time and did a excellent job. The food was very good. The fish was crispy and well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The fried chicken was amazing. The collard greens…. All I can say is you have to try them. They were incredible. This is definitely a must try.

Heard a lot of good things about this place over the years. Was in the area today around lunch time and decided to finally give it a try. It was excellent! I knew from the smell of this place when I walked in that it was going to be a great meal. Lots of options to choose from, almost too many for me to decide because so many of them sounded good. I decided to go with the smoked meatloaf, green beans, and mashed potatoes. The food was delicious! It genuinely tasted like someone’s grandmother from the south had cooked it. Tons of flavor! My coworker got the smash burger and he was quite happy with his meal as well. The only criticism I have was that it was pretty pricey for lunch, and they do not brew their own unsweet tea (which very much surprised me). Good food is definitely worth more, but the price was more of what I would typically expect for dinner so this would be a tough spot to be on the regular rotation for lunch. I will definitely come back again every now and then though.

A delicious experience at His Place Eatery. In town for sporting event. Downtown Indy is a great spot for fun and games, but I NEEDED some southern cooking in my life. A quick Google search revealed numerous 4 and 5 star reviews for His Place, which was more than enough evidence to give them a try. We arrived at opening on Saturday. The staff was immediately hospitable. ‘Lo was our server and she radiated great vibes throughout our visit. The menu is both impressive and daunting–trust me, you want everything on it. Chicken and waffles, barbecue, food fried and/or smothered and YES, peach cobbler. My 15 year old had the peach cobbler chicken and waffles (nope, not a misprint) while I had smoked meatloaf. Collard greens were fresh and tasty with just a tangy hint of vinegar. Meatloaf had mild amount of smoke, dressed with barbecue sauce. The food was so good, the menu so killer, I thought “this place deserves to be on ‘Diners Drive-Ins and Dives'”. Turns out it already has been on! At His Place, they serve you like you were Guy Fieri and that alone makes a great meal a 5 star meal. BRAVO ❤️

His Place Eatery deserves a glowing 5-star review for its soulful flavors, warm hospitality, and unforgettable comfort food experience!!
A true gem in Indianapolis!
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a cozy, welcoming vibe that feels like home. The staff is friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food they serve.
Our server, Tracy , made sure everything was perfect from start to finish!! Big thank you
The fried chicken is hands-down some of the best I’ve ever had! crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection.
The bourbon creamed corn is a must-try: rich, sweet, and full of flavor with a hint of heat from red pepper.
The collard greens and green beans are cooked just right, bringing that authentic Southern taste to the table
And let’s talk about the Chicken & Waffles—a showstopper! The waffle was fluffy and golden, paired with perfectly fried chicken and a side of peach butter that takes it to another level.
Every dish was served hot, fresh, and with generous portions that left us full and happy.
Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food.
The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with a quiet charm that makes you want to linger.
Whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeout, this place hits all the right notes.
Highly recommend for anyone craving soul food done right. I’ll definitely be back whenever I am in the city and referring and bringing friends!

First time trying His Place Eatery. We ordered several options to try. The fried chicken was perfect; juicy and flavorful. The rib tips tasted great. The grilled Cajun Catfish was seasoned well and had a little kick. Portion sizes were good for the price. All the sides we tried were good and very flavorful (mac & cheese, green beans, dressing & gravy, bourbon creamed corn, corn muffin, and white toast with strawberry butter). Our favorite side was the Mac & Cheese. The sweet tea was lemony and delicious. All the staff were welcoming and our waitress was attentive. Great experience overall. We will be back.

The friendliest restaurant i have every been! Feels like you walked into a friend’s home. Warmth and genuine hellos greeet you when you walk in. Service is fantastic. The chicken and waffles were amazing as was the pulled pork. I thought the brisket a bit too fatty for me but if thats how you like it, then theirs is definitely moist and up your alley. Beans and fries were delicious. Great place for BBQ in Indianapolis.

I’ve been by a couple times now with coworkers and I plan to keep coming back. The food is INCREDIBLE. If you’re craving some soul food this is the joint, without question. This last time I got the Experience, which is the best bologna sandwich I’ve ever had.
The other highpoint of His Place Eatery is the staff. They are the best! Our waitress today, Neani was friendly, attentive, and got everything correct.
Keep up the excellent work everyone!

Service/Atmosphere
Had to revise my original review that was up for years. I’ll start off by saying the new lady they had at the register today. Was extremely polite aswell as one of the waitresses. The really light skin woman I missed her name. However she was really nice.
The Food
The food is the basis and the fundamental reason. For revision on my long standing review of 4 stars for years. Now I wanna speak directly to the owner. To the orginal owner’s and or current owners. Aswell as to whomever manages or runs this place. No pun intended!
However I’m not sure where things went off the rails in the kitchen. If this place was sold under new management etc. However the wife and I have been coming here for years. And the last two times the taste has been abysmal.
The smothered pork chops in the last few years have drastically changed. The gravy is disgusting and the breading is awful. There are several reviews saying this so LISTEN to your customers. The sweet cinnamon taste in the gravy isn’t good STOP IT. Futhermore if you all could please reinstitute. Whomever was cooking that made y’all great in the beginning. Make His Place Eatery Great Again!
I’m giving 2 stars only cause I have faith y’all can be good again. Also because of the two pleasant staff members. But the taste of my food tonight was so unacceptable. That I prolly won’t be back. The cost is to high for subpar food.
I love supporting local businesses and restaurants. Problem is, some local businesses get cocky and comfortable. After they gain a colt following. Establish a reputable name within the community. Then they begin to lax on taste, quality, presentation. And portion size relative to price ratio . Overall my consumer satisfaction rating with this establishment. Has drastically diminished over the last couple years. Unfortunately down to 2 stars. The chops where so bad I literally trashed them uneaten. This is unacceptable , and I will not be throwing away my money again literally.

The owner, Mr. James is a great man! The food is always great here and just recently my sister passed away and my stepmother works at this restaurant and he made sure that there was enough food for her celebration of life. No questions asked I can’t thank him enough for what he did For our family. A truly compassionate man, and a restaurant with food to die for! I would recommend this restaurant to literally everybody in Indianapolis! There’s no better food like soul food

First time eating here and we’re already thinking of what we want to try next!! They seriously treat you like family. The ambiance inside was comfy, cozy, and homey. We were seated as soon as we walked in and asked if we had been there before. Since it was our first time, our waitress, Neani, welcomed us warmly and gave us some recommendations! We ordered the Turkey Manhattan and the chopped brisket sandwich with green beans and mashed potatoes & gravy on the side. Sweet tea too! The food came out fast and as soon as it did the chef came over, welcomed us, and wished us a delicious & blessed meal. From the first bite we were HOOKED!! Our girl, Neani, came back often to check on us and made sure to keep our sweet tea’s filled. Which by the way, the sweet tea was perfect and some of the best we’ve ever had, in the north and the south. Once we were almost fully stuffed, we ordered peach cobbler to share. When I say this peach cobbler was so good it was hard to fathom- I’m not kidding. Warm with a little crunch and a nice scoop of ice cream on top! It was a giant portion that my boyfriend and I could not even finish together! We took leftovers home and ordered a banana pudding to go, which made the BEST leftovers. All this to say, we can’t wait to come back and try something new!!
