Verandah Progressive Indian Restaurant – Houston, Texas
Reviews
From the moment the first dish arrived, the balance of textures and aromas was extraordinary. The progression of flavors evolved naturally from course to course, showing off the chef’s skill and attention to detail. Whether you’re new to Indian food or already a fan, Verandah delivers a fine-dining experience that’s both approachable and deeply satisfying. Highly recommended for anyone craving true culinary artistry
The menu is interesting with a variety of traditional dishes and some unique ones. We got drinks (interesting cocktail menu!) and appetizers. The drinks were very good and the appetizers were excellent. For the main course we got a dal, sabzi and a variety of breads. All the dishes were excellent and we enjoyed our meal. I wouldn’t say it was exceptional or the best we have ever had, but I would definitely say it was very good and I would recommend it as a good Indian restaurant. Got a couple of desserts to finish up and we have a good evening!
Strongly recommend this place if you are in the vicinity.
As vegetarians, we were delighted to find a wide variety of Indian dishes that truly captured traditional taste. The staff was courteous, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our visit.
Highly recommend Verandah for anyone looking for a great Indian fine dining experience.
Would recommend to all!!
A few points which I wanted to highlight:
1. A significant lapse occurred between the placement of our appetizer order and its eventual arrival, despite the restaurant’s sparse occupancy. This delay was unexpected, particularly considering the limited number of diners present.
2. The culinary offerings especially the appetizers, while priced at a premium, fell short of expectations. The Gosht ke Gilawats, for instance, were meager portions with limited meat content, priced at a rather exorbitant $15. Such a disparity between cost and quality is particularly disappointing, especially given the fact that the restaurant does not boast a Michelin-star recognition. A more substantial and flavorful experience would be commensurate with the elevated price point.
3. The Awadhi Chicken Biryani ($29) and Mutton Biryani ($34) were indistinguishable in terms of rice texture and flavor, suggesting a lack of authenticity and culinary distinction. The rice, the heart of any biryani, was identical in both dishes, lacking the unique character and flavor profile associated with their respective regional origins or “Gharanas”. While the Mutton Rogan Josh and Roomali Rotis were commendable, the biryani experience failed to deliver the authentic and distinct dining experience we had hoped for.
4. The frequency of interruptions by waitstaff, such as refilling glasses or inquiring about the meal, detracted from our desired privacy, particularly for us couples on special dates. A more subdued lighting scheme in certain areas would’ve further enhanced our experience.
Finally, in conclusion, the culinary offerings were unable to warrant a higher rating than three stars. Significant improvements are necessary in the food department to elevate the overall dining experience. The potential for greatness is evident, and we hope that constructive feedback will be taken into consideration to enhance the restaurant’s future offerings.
RESPONSE TO OWNER:
The reason we did not say those negative things to the hostess while dining was because of something known as dining etiquette, we were being polite to her. However, in this case, it looks like no good deed goes unpunished. Also, since we were on a special date and wanted some privacy, and did not like her continuous barging into our conversation.
1. The waiting time between courses were too long. I had to wait 15-20 mins for each course. I was given the excuse that it’s a busy night, but I’ve been to busier restaurants who serve food on time.
2. The food, while tasty, all had the same look. The first course of Kakori kebab and the main course of Murg Malai all had the same monotonous look. While they each tasted really well, a change in shape would have added to the experience.
3. Adding 20% gratuity by default on all bills. I don’t think this should be a default move. The restaurant owner should pay their waiters more and not charge the already (over)paying customer to pay for it. Tips should be entirely up to the customer based on their experience and not a default move.
Regardless, you’ll have a great experience trying the dishes here. Just wish the above points were taken care of so I could rave about the place rather than leave a little disappointed.
Sumptuous Food: Being a Vegetarian and finding a palatable place to calm your gourmet stomach has always been a challenge. However, this restaurant exactly matches your expectations and makes your feel satisfied once you leave the place.
Jackfruit Biryani: If you are a Jackfruit fan and would want to relish the best “Katahal Biryani” in town then head straight to this eatery.
Ambience: Even though the place is not that humongous as compared to other 4+ star eateries, still this place gives your that elegant feel and quite exquisite restrooms.
Service: Great and prompt service from the team.
Do yourself a favor and plan a visit to this place this weekend.
